More than 490 students received diplomas and certificates during Paris Junior College’s commencement ceremonies held Friday, May 9, at Noyes Stadium.

Dr. Pamela Anglin, president of Paris Junior College, greeted the capacity crowd of family and friends that filled the stadium. She introduced the PJC Board of Regents members present.

The Paris Junior College Master Teacher for 2008 is Santos Garcia, who was in the first group to be hired as full-time faculty at the Greenville Center. For 13 years he has taught Office Technology and Computer Information Services courses at the PJC — Greenville Center.

The Master Teacher is nominated by faculty; a committee evaluates the nominees according to a set of specified criteria and selects the recipient. Dr. Anglin noted Garcia’s dedication to students and to his work in the classroom, and credited his dedication for helping make the PJC — Greenville Center the student-friendly place it is today.

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Max Goerte of Telephone, Texas. The award is an academic honor given to an outstanding graduating student. The recipient is selected by the faculty and professional staff of the College. This award was first given in 1935 to Louis B. Williams.

Goerte has been recognized by Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. He has been active in campus organizations as well as service to the community. He is graduating with a GPA of 3.90 and attends Paris Junior College on scholarship.

He has been named to the President’s Honor Roll and has served as a peer mentor. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and an officer in Phi Beta Lambda. He serves as a 4-H leader and volunteer and a member of Beautification, Education and Enforcement Strategies (BEES), an organization to beautify Fannin County. Goerte is the recipient of a $3,000 Don’t Mess With Texas Scholarship and a $10,000 4-H Walrath Scholarship. He is a business major and will continue his education at Texas A&M University - Commerce.
