Later ending dates for several area high schools led to an adjustment to the beginning of summer classes by the Paris Junior College Board of Regents Monday evening.

Initially the schedule was to begin in the last week of May, but nearly half of the 27 independent school districts in the PJC service area are not concluding until the first week of June.

“Registration has been adjusted to the June 3-5, and June 9 now the first day of the summer semester,” said PJC Dean of Academic Studies Dwight Chaney. “There will be no change to the number of class days so we will meet state mandates.”

Per credit hour tuition was also increased by $2 for in-district, out-of-district and out-of-state students. In addition, the building use fee in Greenville was increased from $5 to $10 per hour to increase funds going to the new building.

Dr. Steve Batson, a consultant from Cargill & Associates, reported on findings of a feasibility study to do a capital campaign for PJC. Both mail surveys and personal interviews were done and the findings compared with results of over 5,000 similar studies done nationwide.

Overwhelmingly, nearly all respondents viewed PJC as providing very strong educational programs and viewed the programs as above average to outstanding. Nearly 90 percent indicated they would financially support a campaign and some 78 percent said they would consider volunteering in such a campaign.

“This pre-campaign survey is a testing of the waters,” Dr. Batson reported. “Your President, Dr. Anglin, is viewed very favorably as a strong leader who is very dedicated to the students of Northeast Texas.”

The findings indicated that highest community support is for a new building focused on science, health, math and other high technologies.

In the President’s Report, Dr. Pamela Anglin reported that the basketball conference PJC participates in will welcome two new teams next year and split into two zones: North and South. PJC will be part of the North zone and six teams from the North and six from the South will advance to the regional tournament.

Other actions taken by the PJC Board of Regents included:

  • Approval of minutes from the January 28, 2008 meeting.
  • Acceptance of Financial Report presented by Dean John Eastman.
  • Called for an election of certain seats on the Board of Regents on May 10th - the second Saturday in May. The board also approved contracting with Lamar County in order to utilize the county’s new voting machines.
  • The board approved hiring Ms. Teri Bowers, as Tracking Specialist, Educational Talent Search, effective Feb. 18. Ms. Bowers earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from Texas A&M University - Commerce. She has experience as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and in computer management systems.

The next meeting of the PJC Board of Regents will be March 24, 2008.
