Paris Junior College welcomes students who have special needs. The institution is committed to assisting qualified students as completely as possible. Paris Junior College provides equal opportunities for students with disabilities and ensures access to a wide variety of resources and programs.

The passage of Section 504, Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that the college make certain special arrangement for students with disabilities. This requirement does not mean that less should be required of the student with a disability than of other students, but only that reasonable accommodations should be made to ensure that students with a disability have access to an education. The college will make reasonable accommodations for qualified students with a documented physical, psychological or learning disability who have been admitted to the college and have requested accommodations.

Establishing Disability Services

» Contact a counselor/advisor to begin the process. The counselor/advisor will guide you as to proper procedures for applying for admission, financial aid and special programs. You will need to present your high school transcript or GED scores, or you will be informed as to how you may qualify for admission by individual approval.

» Learn about any test that may be required prior to your admission to the college. Students may be eligible for special testing accommodations for these tests based on qualifying documentation which will be reviewed by the counselor/advisor. DO NOT TAKE A PLACEMENT TEST BEFORE TALKING TO A COUNSELOR/ADVISOR.

» Present appropriate documentation regarding your disability. The Request for Accommodations form includes a detailed explanation of appropriate documentation.

» Complete a Request for Accommodation Form.

The counselor/advisor will contact you when your documentation has been reviewed and will provide you with the Faculty Advisement/Accommodation Form to take to your instructor.

Maintaining Disability Services

Once the counselor/advisor has assessed your documentation and assisted you in determining your accommodations, you must complete the following requirements at the beginning of each semester in attendance to continue services:

» Complete a Request for Accommodations Form.

» Provide a copy of your class schedule to the counselor/advisor at the beginning of each semester to obtain a Faculty Advisement/Accommodation Form.
Return the signed copies of the Faculty Advisement/Accommodation Form to the counselor/advisor.

» Keep the counselor/advisor informed about your academic status and needs.
Fulfill your responsibilities in the classroom.

Eligibility for Services

The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended defines a person with a disability as any individual who:

» Has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more of such person's major life activities.
» Has a record of such impairment, or
» Is regarded as having such impairment.

A "qualified person with a disability" is defined as one who meets the requisite academic and technical standards required for admission or participation in the post-secondary institution's programs and activities.

Appropriate Documentation

Students requesting services from Disability Services at Paris Junior College are required to submit documentation to determine eligibility. Disability Services reserves the right to determine eligibility and appropriate services based on the quality, recentness, and completeness of the documentation submitted. All documentation is confidential and maintained by Disability Services.

PJC does not provide testing for disabilities. The person requesting accommodations must provide appropriate documentation. All documentation is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and students may be required to submit additional documentation. It is required that all reports be written on the evaluating professional’s letter hear, be typed or other wise legible, dated, and signed by the professional providing the assessment. In all cases, the diagnostician must be impartial and not a family member.
