2015 Tyler Junior College Fall Invitational

Oct. 12-13, 2015 Tyler, Texas The Paris Junior College Dragons golf team finished in third place this Tuesday at the Tyler Junior College Fall Invitational held at Pine Springs Golf Club in Tyler. The Dragons shot rounds of 293 and a four-under 284 in the second round. PJC was led by Mansfield freshman Preston Woodard finished tied for fourth place with rounds of 73 and a three under par 69. His two under par 142 achieved a place on the All Tournament team. Jordan Brown continued his steady play with rounds of 75 and a two under 70 to end tied for 10th. Blake Elliott had solid rounds of 72 and 74, ending tied for 12th. Other PJC scores were Grayson Benavides 73, 75 (T17), Lance Roden 77, 71 (T17) and Adam Vining 75,76 (T26). “The first day we played okay," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. "I thought we competed well on the second day and played like we are capable of playing. We have to connect the two days together with consistent play in order to win golf tournaments. Overall I thought we made good strides this week. We played against two really good teams and see where we stand when we compete against the best. The freshmen are getting some good experience being in the last groups early this year. This will help them become better players in the future. I am really proud of the way we handled ourselves on the course. It’s a pleasure to see positive attitudes and good decision making from all the guys.” The Dragons see action next in two weeks at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco, Oct. 25-27.

2015 Southeast Oklahoma Invitational

Sept. 28-29, 2015 Durant, Oklahoma The Paris Junior College Dragons golf team competed in the Southeast Oklahoma State University’s Texoma Championship on Sept. 28-29 at Chickasaw Pointe Golf Club in Kingston, Oklahoma. The Dragons finished in second place with team scores of 298, 299 and 304 for a 901 total and 10 shots behind the host Southeast Oklahoma State University. PJC was the lone junior college in the tournament with NCAA Division II and NAIA schools. PJC was led by freshman Blake Elliott who continued his good play with a four under par first round of 68, followed up with rounds of 73 and 74 to finish the 54-hole tournament one under par 215 and an individual second place finish. “Blake had a good battle with Mason Hunter from SOSU during the last round,” said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. “It went back and forth all day between them. What a great experience for Blake. He was competing with a senior who is 22 years old and has been in that situation many times. Blake went shot for shot with him and ended up one short.” Sophomore Jordan Brown played well with rounds of 74 79 75 and a tie for 12th place. Other Dragons were Grayson Benavides with rounds of 78 74 79, Holden Hernandez had 78 75 78, and Matt Ramsey had 78 77 77. “I thought we competed hard the whole tournament,” said Johnson. “Everyone was focused on being positive and on the next shot. Those are the things we have been working on in practice. We made some big numbers on the last day coming down the last four holes that cost us the tournament. Mistakes are going to happen. We just need to turn a double or triple bogey into a bogey here and there and we will be fine. All the guys were upset with the finish. It was and is a great chance for us to learn what we need to do to close out a round in the future.”

2015 Paris Fall Invitational

Sept. 20-21, 2015 Paris, Texas Paris Junior College's Green Team won Monday's Paris Fall Invitational with a two-round score of 557 (280, 277) at the Paris Golf & Country Club. The team included sophomores Grayson Benavides of Fort Worth and Jordan Brown of Mansfield, and freshmen Blake Elliott of Liberty Hill, Preston Woodard of Mansfield and Holden Hernandez of Burnett. “I thought we played well as a team Monday,” said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. “That’s what it is going to take for us all to be successful this year. We threw a bunch of freshman out there in their first college tournament and they responded well. We kept our emotions in check all day and that is good to see from any golfer. We still have room for improvement in all phases of play. Blake played really well at minus seven for both rounds and won the tournament. Jordan shot under par both rounds and was really consistent. I am really proud of the way they played but I am even more proud of the way they are coming together as a team. They are a quality bunch of young men.” Elliott was named Tournament Medalist, achieving a score of 133 (68, 65). Joining him on the All Tournament team were Brown, Hernandez, and freshman Matt Ramsey of Stonewall, La. Also making the All Tournament Team were Tyler Junior College golfers Trip Hobson at 68-71 (139), Oliver White at 72-67 (139) and Clayton Keck at 73-68 (141).
