2013 District II NJCAA Championship

April 21-23, 2013
Dennis, Texas

The PJC Dragons golf team finished its 2013 season with a third-place finish at The District II NJCAA Championship in Dennis, Texas. Though out of the national tournament, the Dragons' Trumann Nugent won a two-hole playoff over Cameron Lindell from Tyler Junior College to win the Region XIV Medalist title, and Zac Oliver finished as an All-Region team member in fourth place.

The dragons had rounds of 295, 296 and 315, and were led by Trumann Nugent with rounds of 72, 70 and 78, which was good for a fourth-place tie.

Other individuals were Zac Oliver, 81, 72 and 74; Jeremy Salas, 71, 77 and 82; Justin Ary, 72, 77 and 82; Evan Feltham, 80, 78 and 81; and Ben Welker, 71, 79 and 80.

"We really played well the first two rounds, and then we couldn’t get it going the third round," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. "Trumann played well all three rounds and finished his last hole with a hole out for birdie from 80 yards. I thought Jeremy Salas played well in his first big event.

"It was a solid year for our team this year. We fell short of making it to nationals, which was one of our goals, and that was disappointing for all of us."

The 54 holes of the district tournament were combined with the 54 holes from the Texas State Championship to determine the Region XIV champion. In the 108 holes of play for the Regional Championship PJC (1,839) finished second behind Tyler Junior College (1,827).

2013 Texas State Junior College Championship

April 7-9, 2013
Aledo, Texas

The PJC Dragons golf team finished in seventh place at the Texas State Junior College Championship at Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo.

The Dragons had a team score of 933 for the 54-hole event. PJC was led by Trumann Nugent with rounds of 77, 76 and 79. Zac Oliver fired rounds of 79, 78 and 75.

This was also the first half of Region XIV play and also the first 54 holes of District II NJCAA play to determine who will represent the district at the national tournament. Theses scores will carry over to district play in two weeks.

"We didn’t perform well this tournament," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. "We couldn’t get anything going on the greens. Several of the other teams played well. We have a lot of ground to make up in two weeks."

2013 Hal Sutton Intercollegiate Tournament

March 25-26, 2013
Bossier City, La.

The PJC golf team took first place this week at the 2013 Hal Sutton Intercollegiate Tournament, and remains No. 7 in the nation in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA Coaches Poll.

The Dragons won with a two-day total of 607 at the tournament, which was hosted by Centenary College at Stone Bridge Country Club in Bossier City, La., Monday and Tuesday.

The Dragons had a solid performance from the entire team, with all six players finishing in the top 14 individually.

The Dragons were led by Justin Ary, who finished second with rounds of 74 and 73, and Trumann Nugent, who tied for third place with rounds of 76 and 73.

"I was very proud of our team win this week," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. "We put some really solid scores up on the second day. They all were focused on helping the team through their own individual decision making on shots. Then, for the most part, they executed the shots.

"We are getting better at the right time, with the Texas State Championship, regionals and district play coming up."

The Dragons' next tournament will be in two weeks at the Texas Junior College State Championship in Aledo.

2013 Wrangler

Feb. 18-19, 2013
Aledo, Texas
Split Rail Golf Club

The Paris Junior College Dragons golf team managed an eighth-place finish under difficult conditions at The Wrangler Invitational Golf Tournament this week.

The tournament was played at the Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo, Texas, and was hosted by Odessa College.

"It was the first tournament of the spring for us," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. "We have a lot of room to improve. Shooting 80 on the first day was a good score with the tough conditions.

"Golf throws you a lot of different challenges. Learning from difficult experiences is critical. I know the guys, and they will work hard on improving our teams performance."
