National Chemistry Week a chance to learn

Published or Revised October 13, 2006

As you might expect, Paris Junior College chemistry instructor Don Kosterman thinks a lot about chemicals. Yet he realizes most people never consider the makeup of everyday items like clothing, autos and candy.

National Chemistry Week, Oct. 22-28, he says, is a great opportunity to explore a part of our world that gets little public consideration.

“Chemistry has an impact on everybody,” he said. “You eat it, you drink it, you sleep on it. It’s everything.”

For those interested in how chemistry is such a big part of everyday life, Kosterman recommended visiting the “Chemical and Engineering News” What’s That Stuff Web page, as well as the Chemical of the Week Web page. Both offer features on how chemistry makes possible our modern lifestyles.
