Nursing admissions criteria modified by Regents

Changing the admission criteria to two nursing programs was the main order of business at the Paris Junior College Board of Regents meeting Monday night. The changes affect the licensed vocational nursing and associate degree nursing programs.
The new admissions criteria are designed to give more weight to students living within the service area and those likely to do well academically. New scoring points will be given for the pre-admission HESI A2 test, being a certified nurse aide, and residing in the PJC service area. In addition to completing a certain number of non-nursing courses, points will be given for completing those courses in the first or second attempt.
In other business, the Regents:
- Swore in new regent Barney Bray.
- Received a financial report from Vice President of Business Services John Eastman showing the first month’s income in the fiscal year is meeting expectations.
- Approved opting out of the exemption for the property tax on goods in transit.
- Voted to continue the current continuing education tuition formula for business and industry and community service classes.
- Received a printout from PJC’s “Online Resume,” found as a link on the main website. The Regents were presented financial ratios maintained by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. PJC compares very favorably to other colleges in the medium category in the areas of financial vulnerability, debt burden, operating revenues and return on net assets.
- Heard in the President’s report of receiving the “Excellence in Education” award from the Texas Association of Business. In the medium category, PJC ranked highest in “momentum points”, a scoring system supported by the industry group. A press release from Rep. Dan Flynn, District 2, about the $542,642 skills development grant recently awarded to PJC and three local Greenville industries by the Texas Workforce Commission was distributed, as was the schedule of Homecoming activities for Nov. 9-12. A new project is evolving between Dr. Anglin and the five Lamar County school superintendents to start a Math and Science Academy for high school juniors and seniors and for developing a Workforce Academy.
- Approved the employment of Bradley Gottshalk as Director of the Small Business Development Center, effective October 10; Shane Rhudy as Student Recruiter/Academic Advisor, effective November 1; and Kristi Weets as Advisor, Upward Bound, effective October 17. Accepted the retirement of Nancy deBin as Learning Skills Instructor, effective Dec. 16.
