Regents set budget for fiscal 2007-2008

Published or Revised August 29, 2007

The Paris Junior College Board of Regents Monday evening approved a $22.4 million budget for fiscal 2007-2008, which begins Sept. 1, and set a proposed tax rate of 19.8 cents for the new fiscal year. The proposed tax rate represents an increase of just 0.0058 cents from the current 19.22 cents. Public hearings on the proposed tax rate have been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, and Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Founders Room of the Administration Building on the PJC campus. The 2007-2008 budget calls for expenditures of $22.4 million, an increase of slightly more than $1 million over the previous year, and necessitated in part by increases in operational and maintenance costs. The figures also reflect an increase in financial aid and scholarship funds. The new budget also projects a slight increase in revenue from state appropriations, as well as an increase in federal funding for financial aid, and a slight increase in funding from tuition and fees. The new budget was approved following a public hearing during which no one addressed the board. In her report to Regents, PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin said foundation piers have been poured at the site of PJC's new Greenville campus, and steel should be delivered to the site by the second week of September. In other action, Regents:
  • Approved the purchase of a new air conditioning chiller to replace an existing 30-year-old unit. The new Carrier unit, to be purchased under a state contract, will cost approximately $350,000.
  • Recognized Paul Bailey upon his retirement at PJC's coordinator of information and marketing. Bailey has held the position for the past 15 years and will retire Aug. 31.
  • Voted to seek the services of a consultant concerning roof repairs to the Bobby R. Walters Applied Technologies Building.
  • Approved the use of college property by the Visitors and Conventions Committee for a portion of the Archery Shooter's Association of Texas Pro/Am national archery contest, which will be held in Paris for the next five years. The contest is held in March of each year.
  • Approved the addition of two years to the one year remaining on Dr. Anglin's employment contract as president of PJC.
  • Approved the certified tax roll for 2007, indicating a total appraised value of $1,898,861,895.
Following an executive session, Regents approved the following personnel changes:
  • The employment of Tracy Stewart as instructor of agriculture; Daniel Parham as an advisor in the Educational Opportunity Center; Amber Taylor as dorm resident supervisor and assistant women's basketball coach; Justin Bowen as dorm resident supervisor and assistant baseball coach; and Duncan "D" Hudson as dorm resident supervisor and assistant men's basketball coach.
  • The resignation of Catherine Huey as instructor of theater; Cristy Crawford dorm resident supervisor and assistant women's basketball coach; Andy Powers as dorm resident supervisor and assistant baseball coach; and James Massey as clinical instructor of associate degree nursing.
The next regular meeting of the PJC Board of Regents will be Monday, Sept. 24.
