The Continuing Education Department at Paris Junior College will hold a variety of classes during September.
Paris Campus
» A Professional Telephone Skills class will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 7. Participants will learn how to handle every caller with tact, confidence, and professionalism while turning difficult callers into satisfied customers.
» The Basics for Starting Your Own Business will meet from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 8. Learn what it takes to start and operate a small business.
» How to Be an Outstanding Receptionist is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 19. This video presentation offers steps you can take to build rapport with customers quickly and easily.
» Lean Manufacturing and 5s: Improving the Workplace will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 21. Participants will learn cost and labor efficiencies achievable b eliminating waste through implementing lean manufacturing principles. The 5s from the Toyota Production System are sort, straighten, shine, standardize and sustain. This is a simple yet highly effective set of techniques to remove waste and clean and organize the workplace.
» First Seat provides truck driver training at their Sulphur Springs location. This 200-hour course provides the skills and knowledge necessary to take the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) exams. Successful completion of the class will provide DOT certification. All applicants must have a physical, drug screen and background screen prior to the first day of class. The next class begins Sept. 18. Call 903-885-9800 for information.
» A Nurse Aide class will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Sept. 5-20. This class offers preparation for entry level assistants to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities.
» A Basic Phlebotomy class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Thursday, Sept. 7 through Jan. 11. Classes will skip the thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. A criminal background and drug screen must be completed before the class begins. Students will train in a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. This class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays for the first month, then on Thursday for the remaining sessions.
» A Medication Aide update is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 9. Course content fulfills the annual renewal requirements for certified medication aides according to specifications of the Texas Department of Health. Students should take this class one month prior to the expiration of their card.
» CPR for Health Care Providers, approved by the American Heart Association will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 14.
» The Heartsaver AED class teaches the basic techniques of CPR and how to use an AED. It is designed for all lay responders as well as family members of high-risk patients for sudden cardiac death. The class meets from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 21.
» CPR Recertification for Health Professionals will be held from 6-10 p.m. on Sept. 26. The American Heart Association certified this class. Written examination and successful demonstration of skills required.
» A Basic Lapidary Art class is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 18 through Oct. 11. Topics will include proper use and maintenance of tools, proper safety techniques of sawing, carving and shaping of the rough gem material.
» A Real Estate MCE Update will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 8-9. This class #15-06-1237-5076, offered by provider #0067, is approved by the Texas Real Estate Commission for 15 hours of MCE credit. It offers 12 hours in legal topics and 2-3 hours in ethics.
» A Real Estate Principles class will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 18 through Oct. 11. This class is an overview of licensing as a real estate broker and salesperson.
» General Industry Safety and Health, a 10-hour class, will introduce students to OSHA policies, procedures, standards and general industry safety and health principles. The class meets from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept 15 and 22.
» A Computer Basics class is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 11. This class introduced computer technology, how to use the keyboard and mouse and proper shutdown procedures. Participants will also draw a picture using Paint, and explore the basics of Notepad. The class will be repeated from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 19.
» A Digital Camera and Scanner class is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday, Sept. 19 through Oct. 3. Students will learn to improve their photos, download photos to the computer, save images and build files and send photos over the Internet.
» An Introduction to Microsoft Word will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 27 through Oct. 5. Topics will cover computer operation terminology, editing functions, formatting and special text options.
» The Intermediate Microsoft Excel class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 11 through Oct. 2. Students will learn to move and copy cell contents, sort mathematical, statistical and financial functions, generate reports, and how to use graphics support.
Understanding Personal Computers is designed for the beginner and uses a hands-on approach that prepares participants to take other computer courses. Basic touch-typing skills would be helpful. This class meets from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sept. 5, 7 and 12.
» Understanding Windows teaches students how to manage and manipulate files and directories as well as explain some of the Windows accessories. The class meets from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sept. 14, 19 and 21.
» Surfing the Web – PrimeTime Online introduces students to the Internet, including e-mail, home pages, and how to perform basic searches. The class meets 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 26 through Oct. 5.
» The Beginning Sign Language class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., each Tuesday, Sept. 19 through Nov. 21. This class introduces students to sing language, finger-spelling and numbers. It provides functional communication skills with individuals who are deaf.
» Survival Spanish for School Administrators, Teachers and Support Staff will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., each Tuesday, Sept. 5 through Oct. 31. Nancy Hudson, a Command Spanish certified instructor, delivers this class of occupational Spanish where no prior knowledge of Spanish is required.
» Spanish for the Physician’s Office will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Thursday, Sept. 7 through Nov. 2 This class is also taught by Nancy Hudson and includes patient registration payment issues, taking patient history, determining chief complaint, diagnosis, lab procedures, explaining and performing treatments, and follow-up procedures.
» Conversational Spanish I will be held from 6 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 11 through Oct. 9. This class gives a practical and functional use of Spanish in a very short period of time. The class uses a teaching method that breaks the language down to basic components to help students form sentences, and say what they want, when they want.
» A Recreational Scuba Diving (open water certification) class will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 9-17. This class will teach you everything you need to know to independently and competently scuba dive.
» The Driver’s Education class is approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety and is open to students at least 15 years of age. A birth certificate, TEA Attendance Voucher, and social security number must be provided. The class meets from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Sept. 5-28.
» Defensive Driving is offered by Paris Junior College #067 in accordance with standards established by the National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc., license #C0297, consists of six hours of classroom instruction. The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 18-19.
» The Kids Hurt Too seminar is designed to help parents understand their children’s needs throughout the divorce process. The seminar will meet from 9 a.m. to noon. on Saturday, Sept. 9

» A Nursing Home Activity Director class will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Tuesday, Sept. 12, through Dec. 5. This class offers development in appropriate skills, theory, psychology and record keeping to meet the Texas Department of Health requirements.
» A Food Protection Management Certification class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 9 and 16. This training and certification is for people in charge of establishments that prepares and serve food to the public. It is structured around the Texas Department of Health, and Food and Drug Administration rules on food service sanitation.
» The Front Line Leadership Series is is divided into seven modules to be offered during September and October. Take an individual course or the seven-week Supervisory Series.
“The Leader in Each of Us” will be offered from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 12. This class offers a broad view of what employees can do to help the organization achieve overall success.
“Managing Change” will help employees turn potential threats into opportunities for personal contribution. This class meets from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 19.
“Proactive Listening” will maximize one’s ability to seek out and take in important information. It will be held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 26.
» Assertive Communication Skills for Professionals will meet from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 1. This free video presentation shows communication styles, roadblocks to assertiveness, preparing for confrontation, five key assertiveness skills and covers many other pertinent topics.
» A Professional Telephone Skills class will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 22. Participants will learn how to handle every caller with tact, confidence, and professionalism while turning difficult callers into satisfied customers.
» A Patent, Trademark and Copyright Laws class is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 29. Learn how to register copyrights, select and register a trademark, and how to evaluate creative products for patent protection.
» Invention Commercialization will help you determine the market size, the demand for a product, the best method of making and distributing the produce. Topics will also cover the difference between patents and trade secret protection, licensing, the role of prototype makers and how to locate manufactures. The class meets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 29.

» A Child Development Associate class provides experiences and skills needed to become a Child Development Associate. It is based on the eight-module curriculum developed by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition. The class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 18 through May 14, 2007 at the Early Childhood Learning Center.
» A Beginning Arc Welding class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday, Sept. 19 through Nov. 21. This class covers the theory and introduction to the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) processes. Students will need to furnish their own helmet, glasses and gloves.
» The Intermediate Arc Welding class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 18 through Nov. 27. This class covers manipulative skills in welding techniques, applications and theory. Everyone will complete a project in this class. Students will need to furnish their own helmet, glasses and gloves.
