Talent Search, EOC receive new federal grants

Published or Revised August 22, 2006

The Educational Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Center programs at Paris Junior College have been notified that federal grants for both programs have been approved for an additional four years.

Both programs are funded through the United States Department of Education and are part of the federal TRiO programs.

The Educational Talent Search grant is in the amount of $344,462 per year. Educational Opportunity Center has been funded again with a grant totaling $313,003 per year.

Kimberly Kozel is the director of Educational Talent Search, and Linda Vandiver is director of Educational Opportunity Center.

The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial advising to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to the post-secondary school of their choice.

Talent Search also serves high school dropouts by encouraging them to re-enter the educational system and complete their education. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in the post-secondary education institution of their choice.

Talent Search also provides tutorial services, assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications, assistance in preparing for college entrance exams, and offers mentoring programs.

The Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC) program provides advising and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter or continue a program of post-secondary education.

An important objective of EOC is to advise participants on financial aid options and to assist in the application process in order to increase the number of adult participants who enroll in post-secondary education institutions.

Services provided by EOC include academic advising, personal advising, career information, information on post-secondary educational opportunities, information on student financial assistance and assistance in completing applications for college admissions, testing and financial aid.
