Section: Golf Results2009 UT-Tyler Fall InvitationalThe PJC golf team got off to a good start this Fall season with a first-place tie at the UT-Tyler Fall Invitational held at the Cascades Golf Club in Tyler. The Dragons not only battled the 10-team field, but also took on the wet weather and soggy conditions. The tournament was limited to the final day and 18 holes where the Dragons shot a 294 team total which tied them with Tyler Junior College. Paris lost in a fifth-man score card playoff. "We had a good day, and we played well as a team. We have good depth on this year’s team that will help us to do well as a team," said PJC Golf Coach David Johnson. "We handled our emotions well, I thought. We didn’t get too high on good shots or, more important, we didn’t get too low when we hit a bad shot or barely missed a putt. We forgot about it and focused on the next shot. The guys did a good job of not ever saying anything about the weather and just playing." Sophomore Kevin Giesbrecht from Carman, Manitoba, Canada, was the tournament medalist with a one over par 71. He was backed up by two other sophomores, Preston Spoonemore and Thomas Bourne, with solid rounds of 73. Two freshman playing in their first college action were Cody Crim, 77, and Riley Goff, 79. "Kevin has been playing solid in practice, and it was good to see him do it under tournament pressure," Johnson said. "We talk a lot about making good decisions and trying to eleminate big numbers on holes. Tom and Preston did a good job of that this week. "We all learned that no matter how bad you are struggling, you have to finish strong even if you are the fifth guy that particular day. Your score might count, too. It was a good start to the year, and we will try to build on what we learned this week." The Dragons will get back into action at home hosting the Paris Junior College Fall Invitational at the Paris Golf and Country Club on Sept. 28. Play will begin at 8:15 a.m. and go all day with 36 holes being played. Everyone is invited to come out and support the team at home. Team Standings
