Coca-Cola - MCC Fall Golf Tournament

Results and coach's comments on the Coca-Cola - McLennan Community College Fall Golf Tournament.

Coca-Cola - MCC Fall Golf Tournament
Bear Ridge Golf Club, Waco, Texas
Sept. 12-13, 2005
Par: 72
Yardage: 7,250

Coach's Comments:

Bear Ridge Golf Club has been around for five or six years and has turned into a great test of golf.

The course is around 7,400 yards, with Bermuda rough cut at about four or five inches high, which made hitting the fairways a high priority. The format for the tournament was somewhat different. In the Maxwell team format, all five players on each team play together in one group and use the best four out of five scores on each hole.

The third hole was a 460-yard par 4 dogleg right, which proved to be a tough hole that we played at 8 over par both days. The fairway was narrow, and the rough was nasty thick. It was the 12th hardest hole, according to the score card.

We played well, but the kids know they left a bunch of shots out there the last couple of days. They competed well the last day and were buying into the team idea. If they know they could have improved, that's what matters.

We need to get off to a better start on the first day and focus on being more consistent. They need to know that making par is a good thing. The kids have high expectations of making a lot of birdies, which is great, but they have to learn not to get too down about making par.

KeeDae Lee played very consistently, while Patrick McCarthy putted really well, but was a little more up and down. He struggled with the 10th hole, playing it 4 over for both days. Patrick also made more birdies than anyone else.

Nick Perry played up and down. He barely missed a double eagle on the par 5, 577-yard 8th hole and ended up making the eagle. Kyle Hefner struck the ball well, but struggled with his putter. Johnathan Dickerson struggled on the first day, but came back strong on the second day with a even par 72.

It was good to get out and play under tournament pressure and see how the kids would respond. We saw some things that we need to improve on, and that's what we plan to do. I want the young men to make good decisions on the course - and in life.

They represented Paris College well this week.
