Continuing ed courses scheduled for October

Paris Junior College's continuing education offerings range from computer courses to those styled to help you with your business.

Paris Junior College’s Continuing Education Department will present a large selection of classes during October.

Paris Campus

  • How to Start Your Own Business will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 3. Learn what it takes to start and operate a small business during this free seminar.
  • A Patent, Trademark and Copyright Laws workshop will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 3. Participants will learn how to register a copyright, select and register a trademark, how to evaluate creative products for patent protection, and resources available on the Internet.
  • An Invention Commercialization seminar is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 3. Topics will include how to determine market size, demand for a product, the best method of making and distributing a product (make vs. license), and Provisional Patents, the USPTO Disclosure Document Program, and additional important information.
  • The QuickBooks business accounting class will meet from 8 a.m. to noon each Tuesday and Friday, Oct. 7-17.
  • Recruit and Hire Good Employees will explain the services offered by Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas. The session runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 23.
  • Your Money Roadmap is packed full of financial management tips and techniques regarding cash flow, handling debt, improving credit, predatory lending and prevention of identity theft. The seminar will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 28.
  • Podcast Marketing for Small Business offers a new way to market a business, product, or service to the U.S. and the world. This class will show what is possible and how to get started. The class meets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 30.
  • A Grant Writing Workshop will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Participants will identify online resources to search funding, describe the basic sections of a proposal, identify the types of documents necessary to include with a proposal, and learn to recognize the common mistakes of proposal writers.
  • The Microsoft Excel 2007 Intermediate class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 6-15. Learn more advanced techniques to analyze data, enhance charts, and to automate worksheet tasks.
  • A Microsoft Word 2007 Intermediate class is scheduled from 1 p.m. 5 p.m. each Monday, Oct. 6-20. Students will learn advanced techniques to enhance documents.
  • The Microsoft Word Intermediate 2003 class meets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Saturday, Oct. 18-25. Learn to illustrate documents with graphics, merge word documents, work with styles and templates, and develop multi-page documents.
  • A Microsoft Excel Intermediate 2003 class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 21-30. This class covers managing workbook data, using tables and analyzing table data, and automating worksheet tasks through macros and enhancing charts.
  • The Quick Start Series, Office 2007 will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., each Monday, Oct. 27 through Nov, 17. These sessions will provide steps necessary to update and transition from Microsoft Office 2003 to Office 2007 with the least stress.
  • The Defensive Driving course is offered by Paris Junior College #067 in accordance with standards established by the National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc., license #C0297, and consists of six hours of classroom instruction. The class meets from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 15-16.
  • The Driver Education course is approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety and is open to students at least 15 years of age. A birth certificate, TEA Attendance Voucher, and social security card must be provided. The class meets from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Oct. 27 through Nov. 20.
  • The Basic Life Support (CPR) class, approved by the American Heart Association, will be offered in a choice of two time frames and dates during October. The evening session meets from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6-7. The class will be repeated from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
  • A Nurse Aide class runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Oct. 13-29. This class prepares entry level assistants to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities.
  • The Pharmacy Technician class will be offered from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 13 through Dec. 3. This comprehensive course prepares students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. For additional information, call 1-866-885-4520.
  • A Physical Therapy Technician class prepares students to enter the growing field of Physical Therapy and work un the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist, assisting in the treatment and care of patients. The class will be held fro 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 13 through Dec. 10.
  • A Pharmacy Compounding and Sterile Preparations class is for those who have worked or are currently working in the role of a Pharmacy Technician or have successfully completed a Pharmacy Technician Program. The class is held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 14 through Dec. 4.
  • A Basic Life Support (CPR) Recertification for Health Professionals will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 17. Written examination and successful demonstration of skills is required. The American Heart Association certified this course.
  • A Dental Assistant class prepares students for entry level positions. Call 903-782-0447 to register or call 1-866-885-4520 to receive additional information. The class is held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday, Oct. 14 through Dec. 23. The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student will all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the professional skills required to function as an assistant in the dental practice.
  • The Kids Hurt Too seminar is designed to help parents understand the needs of their children throughout the process of divorce. It will be presented from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 7.
  • Demystifying Your Digital Camera will show how a camera works, and hot to optimize a camera for specific needs. Instruction will include how to get the best quality images and acquire an understanding of digital imaging, including resolution, software and printers. Participants should bring their own camera and instruction manual if they have one. The class meets from 8:30 a.m. to noon, each Friday, Oct. 10-17.
  • During the Works of Art class students will learn how to correlate American Art with American History. A chronological history of American art is presented in the Hayden Museum through a permanent collection of graphic art, archival photography and American chairs. The class meets from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., each Tuesday, Oct. 14-21 at the Museum.
  • An Intermediate Wire Wrapping jewelry class will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Wednesday, Oct. 15 through Nov. 12. Students will create lovely pendants in sterling silver with cabochons and beautiful semi-precious tumbled stones.
  • A Cake Decorating class will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Oct. 27-30. Students will learn the tools needed in order to be successful with cake decorating. Other topics will include how to properly bake, tear, fill, crumb-coat and ice a cake for a professional look. Instruction will be offered and then practice given in piping, creating a variety of borders, garlands, embellishments, simple flowers, roses, and basket-weaves, how to cover a cake drum and safe transporting of cakes.
  • The Real Estate Principles II class, a continuation of the Principles I class, will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 7-30.

Paris Regional Medical Center PrimeTime and Paris Junior College offer an easy step-by-step method of Computing for the Senior Adult.

  • Understanding Personal Computers meets from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 14-21. This class is designed for the novice and uses a hands-on approach that prepares adults to take other computer courses.
  • Understanding Windows will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 23-30. Mastering the Windows operating system will allow participants to become comfortable in creating, saving, and finding files, open and close multiple documents without fear of losing them, and explore some of the Windows accessories.

Greenville Campus

  • The How to Start Your Own Business seminar will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. Learn what it takes to start and operate a small business. This program will be repeated from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 24.
  • The Quickbooks business accounting class will meet from 1-5 p.m. each Wednesday, Oct. 22 to Nov. 12. NOTE: This class will meet at the Greenville Chamber of Commerce location. Participants will learn to set up and maintain a chart of accounts, reconcile a checking account, create and print invoices, receipts, and statements, track payables inventory, receivables, statements, create estimates and generate reports.
  • A Patent, Trademark and Copyright Laws workshop will run from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 24. Participants will learn how to register a copyright, select and register a trademark, how to evaluate creative products for patent protection, and resources available on the Internet.

The class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11.
  • A Microsoft Excel 2007 Basic class will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., each Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 13-22. This class offers instruction for creating a worksheet, working with formulas and functions, formatting a worksheet, working with charts, and analyzing data using formulas.
  • The Microsoft Excel 2007 Intermediate class will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., each Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Nov. 5. Students will learn more advanced techniques to analyze data, enhance charts and to automate worksheet tasks.
  • Surfing the Web offers an introduction to the Internet including e-mail, home page, and how to perform basic research to address business needs. This class meets from 2:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., each Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 7-16.
  • Understanding Personal Computers offers basic computer operation instruction using a hands-on approach that prepares students to take other computer courses. This class will meet from 4 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., each Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 13-22.
  • The Understanding Windows class will meet from 4 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., each Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Nov. 5. This class allows students to become comfortable in creating, saving, and finding files, open and close files without losing them, and explores some of the Windows operating system accessories.
  • A Medication Aide Update is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9. Course content fulfills the annual renewal requirements for certified medication aides according to specifications of the Texas Department of Health. Med Aides should take this class on month prior to the expiration date of their certification card.
  • A Dental Assistant class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., each Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 13 through Feb. 11. This class prepares students for entry-level positions.   • The Family Care giving, Be Red Cross Ready class will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., each Saturday, Oct. 18-25. Fifty million Americans care for a disabled, chronically ill of frail family member. Participants will learn in-depth how to perform care-giving skills more easily and safely in a step-by-step approach.
  • The Group Dynamics seminar meets from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 10. This seminar explores how individual motives, values, and personalities impact group behavior in organizations. It focuses on how to create knowledgeable, flexible and resilient work units that can respond to strategic-level change in organizations. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs will be examined through this seminar.
  • The Self-Harm: A Silent Epidemic workshop will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. This workshop will provide information on the growing epidemic of self-harm by discussing the etiology, symptoms, population impacted, research and resources available for treatment. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of what motivates self harm and why it is growing so rapidly as well as be better prepared to identify self harm and be more knowledgeable in hot to assist those afflicted. The session will touch on ways in which professionals, families and friends can help.
  • A Real Estate MCE Update, consisting of 15 hours of ethics, legal update and other real estate topics will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11. TREC Course #15-06-129-6572, provider #0067, is approved by the Texas Real Estate Commission for 15 hours of MCE credit.

  • Government Contracting 101 is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 10. Topics will include regulations, uniform contract format, contract types, electronic commerce (EC), and more. The trainers for this session help remove the intimidation factor, confusion and complexity, and show how to succeed in government contracting.
  • Welcome to the World of Computers is designed for the person that has very limited, if any, computer training. The class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. Participants will learn basic computer tasks using windows, proper mouse and keyboard techniques, how to type and edit letters using Microsoft Office Word, how to navigate the Internet, and more.
  • A Microsoft Word 2007 Basic class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., each Thursday, Oct. 9-30. This word processing program teaches creating, saving and opening documents, editing documents, cut/copy/paste and find/replace functions, formatting text and paragraphs, and much more.
  • Understanding Windows will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, each Friday, Oct. 3-17. Mastering the Windows operating system will allow participants to become comfortable in creating, saving, and finding files, open and close multiple documents without fear of losing them, and explore some of the Windows accessories.

  • A 200-hour course provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to take the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) exams. The course includes lecture and practice in range and street driving, backing, shifting, pre-trip inspection and more. Students will be Department of Transportation (DOT) certified upon successful completion. New classes start every two weeks.
