Continuing education courses set for August

The Continuing Education/Workforce Department at Paris Junior College will offer a variety of classes during August.

Paris Campus

• How to Start Your Own Business will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 1. Participants will learn what it takes to start and operate a small business.
• A free three-part video presentation, “Management Skills for Assistants and Support Staff,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Aug. 7. Topics will include how to open lines of communication at the office; how to identify and set priorities; effective negotiation skills; time management skills; decision-making and problem-solving skills; and how to project a confident, assertive image.
• The “Exceptional Customer Service” seminar will be presented from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 21. This free video presentation will help participants build better customer service stars and teams within their business.
• A QuickBooks business accounting class designed for day care operators and child care providers will be held from 8 a.m. to noon each Tuesday and Friday, Aug. 5-15. This class offers instruction for setting up and maintaining a chart of accounts, reconciling a checking account, creating and printing invoices, receipts, and statements, tracking payables, inventory and receivables, creating estimates and generating reports.
• If you are a youth, sixth-grade and up, and ever babysit for siblings or other children, then this class is perfect for you. It offers tips and techniques to help you learn to think, then act appropriately in unusual situations while home alone. Topics will include the importance of having emergency telephone numbers; reasons to call 911; first aid and safety; CPR instruction; self-Heimlich maneuver; “house rules;” fire escape planning and severe weather planning. The class meets from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 4-6.
• A Microsoft Excel Intermediate 2003 class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday, Aug. 4-25. This class covers managing workbook data; using table and analyzing table data; automating worksheet tasks through macros, and enhancing charts.
• The Microsoft Outlook 2003 class is a mail application and so much more. It can be used to send and receive e-mails, organize contact information, a personal organizer to schedule meetings, appointments and tasks, and customizing Outlook. The class is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Thursday, Aug. 7-21.
• Understanding Personal Computers will meet from 9 a.m. to noon each Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 5-12. This course is designed for beginner computer operators and uses a hands-on approach to help participants obtain confidence and skills needed to take other computer courses. This class will be held at the PrimeTime location.
• Understanding Windows will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 14-21. Learning the Windows operating system allows computer users to create, save and find files; managing and manipulating files and directories with Windows Explorer; and open and close multiple documents without fear of losing them. This class will be held at the PrimeTime location.
• The Driver Education class is approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety and is open to students at least 15 years of age. A birth certificate, TEA Attendance Voucher, and social security card must be provided. The class meets from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 4-29.
• The Defensive Driving class is offered by Paris Junior College #067 in accordance with the standards established by the National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc., license #C0297, and consists of six hours of classroom instruction. The class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 20-21.
• The Basic Life Support (CPR) Recertification for Health Professionals is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 8. Written examination and successful demonstration of skills is required. The American Heart Association certified this course.
• The Basic Life Support (CPR) class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 11-12.
• The Kids Hurt Too seminar is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 5. This seminar is designed to help parents understand the needs of their children throughout the process of divorce.

Greenville Campus

• Welcome to the World of Computers is designed for the person who has very limited, if any, computer training. Participants will learn basic computer tasks using windows; proper mouse and keyboard techniques; how to type and edit letters using Microsoft Office Word; how to navigate the Internet; and more. The class will meet from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday, Aug. 4-11.
• The Microsoft Excel 2007 Basic class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each Friday, Aug. 8-29. Students will use electronic spreadsheet applications to perform numeric calculations, graph data, develop reports, and much more.
• Demystifying Your Digital Camera will be presented from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., each Wednesday, Aug. 6-20. This class will show participants how their camera works and how to optimize it for specific needs. Participants should bring their own camera and instruction manual.
• A free three-part video presentation, “Management Skills for Assistants and Support Staff,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 22. Topics will include how to open lines of communication at the office; how to identify and set priorities; effective negotiation skills; time management skills; decision-making and problem-solving skills; and how to project a confident, assertive image.
• How to Start Your Own Business will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 22. Participants will learn what it takes to start and operate a small business.
• Government Contracting 101 is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 22. Participants will learn about regulations, uniform contract format, contract types, electronic commerce (EC) so they can begin to build a business base and receive high quality professional help while doing so.
• The Exceptional Customer Service seminar will be presented from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 29. This free video presentation will help participants build better customer service stars and teams within their business.
