Regents get update on financial aid and scholarships

Activities for PJC 85th Homecoming, Nov. 5-7, were outlined by Director of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs Derald Bulls.

The Paris Junior College Board of Regents, at its Oct. 26 meeting, received a financial update from Dean of Business Services John Eastman reflecting that $6,296,251 in federal financial aid and scholarships had been awarded for the fall semester.

Regents also heard from PJC’s Director of Admissions Sheila Reece on recruiting activities of her office. She and her staff of three recruiters have been exceptionally busy in the past year, including most recently on-site registration of dual-credit students at 25 of the 28 high schools in the PJC service area.

Other programs include “Faculty Fridays,” where recruiters team up with workforce education instructors to do presentations at high schools. PJC will host a college fair on Nov. 19 with approximately 25-30 universities attending to present information to PJC students and students from area high schools.

In other business, the Regents:

  • Heard a report from Director of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs Derald Bulls outlining the schedule for the 85th Homecoming on Nov. 5-7, starting with the annual parade at 4 p.m. Nov. 5. Other activities include the Nov. 6 President’s Reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the McLemore Student Center cafeteria, followed by the Noel Coward’s Private Lives at 7 p.m. in the Karrer Theatre. Saturday’s packed schedule starts with the Alumni and Friends business meeting at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria, reunion groups meeting at 10 a.m. in Room 205 in the Student Center, the Distinguished Alumni luncheon honoring Charles “Red” Scott at the Student Center ballroom at noon, the 1959 NJCAA Baseball Team Reunion at the Hub Hollis Field at 2 p.m., the Lady Dragons basketball game at 4 p.m. and Dragons at 6 p.m. with the Homecoming King and Queen crowned at halftime, and a repeat performance of Private Lives at 7 p.m. in the Karrer Theatre and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Approved the 2010-2011 academic calendar presented by Dean of Academics Dwight Chaney.
  • Approved continuation of a formula in use the past few years to calculate tuition for continuing education classes.
  • Received PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin’s update on campus activities and residence hall construction. The Dragon Pride Athletic Booster Club is off to a great start after the inaugural Hamburger Supper held earlier in October. PJC received a grant for $30,040 for students in applied science and certificate courses from the Jobs and Education for Texas program. The funds will help students pay for general and lab fees and tuition. Construction of the residence hall is moving forward.
