September Continuing Ed classes announced

A variety of courses will be offered in September at all three PJC campuses.

The Continuing Education Department at Paris Junior College will hold a wide selection of classes during September.

Paris Campus

  • The Welcome to the World of Computers class is designed for the person who has very limited, if any, computer training. This class will be offered in two time frames. One session meets from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each Saturday, Sept. 20-27. The alternate session meets from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday, Sept. 30, through Oct. 14.
  • A Quick Start Series, Office 2007 class will meet from 10 a.m. to noon each Friday, Sept. 5-26. This seminar is for anyone needing to upgrade from Microsoft Office 2003 to Microsoft Office 2007.
  • A Microsoft Word Basic 2003 class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Saturday, Sept. 6-13. This word processing program offers instruction to create professional looking documents such as letters, memos, newsletters, resumes, flyers and more.
  • A Microsoft Excel Basic 2007 class is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 8-16. This electronic spreadsheet class covers creating and formatting a spreadsheet, working with formulas and functions, working with charts, and analyzing data using formulas.
  • The Microsoft Word Basic 2007 class offers instruction using this word processing application. The class will meet from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 8-22.
  • The Microsoft Access Basic 2007 class will be held from 8 a.m. to noon each Wednesday, Sept. 10-24. This is a database training class.
  • The Microsoft Excel Basic 2003 class will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 16-25. This is an electronic spreadsheet application used to perform numeric calculations, graph data, develop reports, and much more.
  • Jitterbug, East Coast Swing, Jive, Rock and Roll. Whatever you call it this class will teach you this fast spot dance method that does not move around the floor. The class meets from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 8-22.
  • The Driver’s Education class is approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety and is open to students at least 15 years of age. A birth certificate, TEA Attendance Voucher, and social security card must be provided. Two class sessions will be held. The first class meets from 4-6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Sept. 2-25. The second class begins Sept. 29 and runs through October 23.
  • The Defensive Driving course is offered by Paris Junior College, #067, in accordance with the standards established by the National Traffic Safety Institute of Texas, Inc., license #C0297, and consists of six hours of classroom instruction. The course is offered from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 17-18.
  • A Nurse Aide class is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Sept. 2-17. This class prepares entry-level assistants to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities.
  • A basic Phlebotomy class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 11 through Jan. 20, 2009. No uniform is required. A criminal background and drug screen must be completed before the class begins. A GED or high school diploma is required. This must be completed by the conclusion of the program and prior to the exam.
  • This course requires a flexible schedule for clinical participation. Applicants must have a GED or high school diploma, immunization records to include current Hepatitis B, Tetanus and TB immunizations prior to starting the class. Applicants are encouraged to apply for continuing education scholarships.
  • The Basic Life Support (CPR) class, approved by the American Heart Association, will be offered in two time frames during Sept.. One class will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12. It will be offered again from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.
  • The Basic Life Support (CPR) Recertification for health professionals will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 15. Written examination and successful demonstration of skills is required. The American Heart Association certifies this class.
  • A Medication Administration class will meet from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, Sept. 15 through December 3. Participants must have successfully the 75-hour nurse aide training, be a minimum of 18 years of age, have 90 days work experience in a long term care facility, and have a high school diploma or GED. Applicants employed as a nurse aide in a Medicare skilled nursing facility or Medicaid nursing facility are exempt from the 90-day requirement.
  • A Beginning Sign Language class is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 15 through Nov. 24. This American Sign Language class will teach participants to fingerspell words as well as signs for words and phrases.
  • The Sign Language II class meets at the same time as the beginner’s class and develops further skills through practice and demonstration.
  • Spanish for Fun, Part I, offers a practical and functional use of the language in a short period of time. The class meets from 6-8:40 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 8 through Oct. 13.
  • The Kids Hurt Too seminar is designed to help parents understand their children’s needs throughout the process of divorce. The session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 13.
  • A Beginning Yoga class will meet from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 16-25. This class teaches proper breathing, simple exercises to increase strength and develop muscle tone.
  • A Beginning Wire-wrapping class teaches simple jewelry making. Includes wire-wrap beads for accents, wire-wrap crystals or tumbled stones. The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Wednesday, Sept. 10 through Oct. 8.
  • The Works of Art class is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday, Sept. 16-23. This class will meet at the Hayden Museum. Participants will learn how to correlate American art with American history. A chronological history of American art is presented in the Hayden Museum through a permanent collection of graphic art, archival photography and American chairs.
  • Demystifying Your Digital Camera helps participants optimize their camera for the specific needs. The class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.v
  • The Real Estate Principles I class will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 2-25. This class offers an overview of licensing as a real estate broker and salesperson.
  • The Real Estate MCE Ethics class meets N.A.R. requirement for four-year license renewal. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 5.
  • The Real Estate MCE Update, course #15-06-129-6572 offered under provider #0067, is by the Texas Real Estate Commission for 15 hours of MCE credit. The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 5-6.
  • How to Start Your Own Business will cover all the aspects of starting and operating a small business. The session runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 18. The last hour will be a demonstration of Simple Start, an easy to use record keeping system for small businesses.
  • Selling to the Government Using the General Services Administration (GSA) will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 25. This workshop will show how to determine if a GSA Schedule Contract is right for your company, why the schedules exist, and how to prepare an offer that will save your money and win the contract.
  • Changing Your Thinking for Success will be offered from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 23. Many small business owners go spiritually, mentally and physically bankrupt long before they go financially bankrupt. Learn how a simple change in thinking can save one’s sanity and business life while significantly increasing employee satisfaction and profits.
  • Government Contracting 101 will be given from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 23. Topics include regulations, uniform contract format, contract types, electronic commerce and more.

The following classes meet at Paris Regional Medical Center’s PrimeTime location.

  • Understanding Personal Computers is designed for the novices and uses hands-on teaching for basic computer use. The class meets from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 9-16.
  • Understanding Windows offers instruction to create, save and find files. This class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 18-25.
  • Surfing the Web introduces using the Internet including e-mail, home page, and how to perform basic research to address company/business needs. The class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 30 through Oct. 7.

Greenville Campus

  • Welcome to the World of Computers is designed for the person who has very limited, if any, computer training. The class meets from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13.
  • The Microsoft Word Basic 2007 class offers instruction using this word processing application. The class will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday/Wednesday, Sept. 15-24.
  • A Microsoft Word Intermediate 2007 class is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday/Wednesday, Sept. 29 through Oct. 8. Topics will include illustrating documents with graphics, working with themes and building blocks, merging word documents, working with styles and templates, developing multi-page documents with headers, footers, table of contents and sections.
  • Understanding Personal Computers is designed for the novices and uses hands-on teaching for basic computer use. The class meets from 2:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 9-18.
  • Understanding Windows offers instruction to create, save and find files. This class will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 23 through Oct. 2.
  • A Medication Administration class will meet from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, Sept. 8 through Nov. 25.   • Family Caregiving — Be Red Cross Ready offers straightforward, trustworthy information to make the caregiving role easier. Participants will learn in-depth how to perform caregiving skills more easily and safely in a step-by-step approach. The seminar runs from 3-5 p.m., each Tuesday, Sept. 23-30.
  • A Beginning Sign Language class is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 15 through Nov. 24. This American Sign Language class will teach participants to fingerspell words as well as signs for words and phrases.
  • A Situational Leadership seminar will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 12. This seminar teaches individuals the management and coaching skills needed to assist in the development of their employee’s competence and productivity.
  • A Real Estate Marketing class provides the fundamental steps that have successfully launched profitable careers for hundreds of agents. This 30-hour real estate core course will be held from 6-9 p.m., Monday/Wednesday, Sept. 22 through Oct. 22.
  • “What’s So Important About Customer Service?” is a session that offers a light-hearted look at customer service while pointing out many very serious areas that may go unnoticed in everyday business operations. This seminar will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 18.
  • How to Start Your Own Business will cover all the aspects of starting and operating a small business. The seminar runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 26. The last hour will be a demonstration of Simple Start, an easy to use record keeping system for small businesses.
  • Your Money Roadmap will help develop necessary personal money management skills to improve cash flow and learning to live within one’s means with no financial stress. This seminar will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 26.

Sulphur Springs Campus

  • A Child Development Associate class will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., each Tuesday/Thursday, Sept. 9 through Jan. 27, 2009. This 120-hour course provides credentials as set forth by the Council for Professional Recognition. Participants must successfully complete the class and a direct assessment and request a verification site visit. The CDA credential will be awarded upon completion of a successful site evaluation and exam.
  • A Quick Start Series, Office 2007 class will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday/Thursday, Sept. 24 through Oct. 2. This seminar is for anyone needing to upgrade from Microsoft Office 2003 to Microsoft Office 2007.
  • The Welcome to the World of Computers class is designed for the person who has very limited, if any, computer training. This class will be offered from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 17-18.
  • Understanding Personal Computers is designed for the novices and uses hands-on teaching for basic computer use. The class meets from 9 a.m. to noon, each Friday, Sept. 5-26.
  • This 200-hour course provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to take the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) exams. Upon successful completion, students will be Department of Transportation (DOT) certified. New classes begin every two weeks.   • A Medication Aide Update will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 11. Course content fulfills the annual renewal requirements for certified medication aides according to specifications of the Texas Department of Health. Med Aides should take this class one month before their certification card expires.
  • A Digital Camera class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday, Sept. 6-20. Participants will learn the art of taking pictures and information using the latest in digital cameral. Topics will include the mechanics of down-loading photos to the computer, saving images and building files, and sending photos over the internet.
  • Raising Capital for Your Business meets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 16. Learn what lenders are looking for when making a business loan, getting a commercial loan from your bank, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) guaranteed loans, SBA 504 loans, and preparing your loan package.
  • How to Start Your Own Business will cover all the aspects of starting and operating a small business. The session runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 19. The last hour will be a demonstration of Simple Start, an easy to use record keeping system for small businesses.
  • A Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law seminar will met from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 19. Learn how to register a copyright, select and register a trademark, and how to evaluate products for patent protection.
  • An Invention Commercialization seminar will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 19. This seminar will help participants determine market size, the demand for a product, the best method of making and distributing the product (make vs. license). Other topics include USPTO Disclosure Document Program, Provisional Patents, the difference between patents and trade secret protection, licensing, role of prototype makers, and how to locate manufacturers.
  • A Beginning Arc Welding class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday at the Sulphur Springs High School, Sept. 16 through November 18. This class covers the theory and introduction to the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) processes. Students will need to furnish their own helmet, glasses and gloves.
