Training for literacy volunteers set for Aug. 19

Those interested in volunteering for the Lamar County Literacy Council program should sign up by Aug. 15.

The Lamar County Literacy Council will hold a training session Aug. 19 for anyone interested in becoming a tutor and working in the program, according to Director Louisa Kessel.

The session begins at 6 p.m. in the Rheudasil Learning Center at Paris Junior College. Volunteers will learn what responsibilities are required to become a tutor and how to work with adult learners, including planning meetings, organizing lessons and completing volunteer paperwork.

Tutors work one-on-one with adult learners who need assistance in learning to read and improving reading skills. Other assistance may be required with mathematics or social science skills deemed necessary to become productive citizens. Tutors also may be asked to give support to special events and educational activities.

Contact Adult Education and Family Literacy at 903-782-0422 or e-mail Kessel at by Aug. 15 to sign up for this training.
