Volleyball’s Rules

To enjoy watching volleyball, you need to know a few basic rules and some jargon associated with the game. Here are some rules and lingo to help the new volleball fan.

The PlayMATCHES are played best three out of five to 30.

GAME 5 and the deciding game is played to 15 if necessary. Sides switch at 8 points total between the two teams.

RALLY scoring is used, which means that a point is scored on any down ball, whether or not a team is serving. A score can occur as a result of a kill or an error.

EACH team is allowed six players on the floor at a time.

TEAMS must stay in the same rotation or positions that they were placed in from the start of the game.

EACH team is allowed 12 substitutions a game. Once a team has reached 12 substitutions, no more subs may enter the game.

A PLAYER entering for another must continue to go in and out for that player for the duration of the game, unless they are the libero.

THE libero is strictly a defensive player who plays back row only. They are designated by wearing an oppsite color jersey from the rest of their team. Their substitution does not count against the 12 substitution rule. In order for the libero to enter into the game for another player, they must first exit to the sideline and re-enter on the next deadball.

EACH side is allowed three touches on the ball. The ball must go back over the net on the third hit, usually pass, set, attack. To hit the ball more that three times on a side is illegal, and the opposing team is awarded the point.

THERE cannot be double contact on the ball. The ball must hit clean and be passed clean. A double hit is also illegal, and the opposing team is awarded the point. The official signals a double hit by holding up two fingers.

POSITIONS in volleyball are:

S - Setter
RS/RF - Right side/Right Front
MB - Middle Blocker
OH/LF - Outside Hitter/Left Front
DS - Defensive Specialist
L - Libero

The LingoEvery sport has its jargon, words and phrases associated with the play or even the game’s culture. Here are some words to help you understand the game of volleyball.

PASS: Any ball received by a player to another player on their side of the floor. The first pass usually always goes to the setter, depending on how you want to attack.

FOREARM PASS: Any ball passed from the forearm from a serve, freeball, or downball.

OVERHEAD PASS: Anything received over the head with the hands.  Also known as a set. The setter’s main pass is an overhead pass.

DOWNBALL - ATTACK - SPIKE: Any play on the ball which is caused by an open-hand, extended-arm attack from above the head, or overhead pass over the net (push/place shot). These are shots taken at the opponent’s side of the floor.  These can result in a kill, which scores a point.

FREEBALL: Any shot taken over the net at the opponent’s side, which is caused by a forearm pass. These shots are used in situations where a downball-attack-spike could not be played. Also known as a safe ball.

DIG: A dig is any ball kept in play by the defense as a result of the opponent attacking. A dig can be a forearm pass, overhead pass, or the ball hitting any part of the player’s body and popping up. A dig is usually only counted when the defensive is attacking.

SET: A set is a ball given by the setter to the hitters for an attack. There are types of sets, which are based on tempos - 1, 2 and 3 tempo sets. The lower the tempo, the quicker the set.

SERVE: Contact of the ball behind the end line which initiates the play. The server must wait for the up official’s signal before serving. The serve must cross over the net in order for it to be good. There is a let serve which means that the ball can hit the top of the net and go over and still be legal.

ACE: A serve that the other team could not pick up or handle off the first pass. Results in a point.

BLOCK: A defensive play where the players at the net jump and deny a ball from entering their side of the floor with their hands. There will be several blocks during a match. A block is counted when the ball is blocked back down on the attacking side and results in a score.
