The former Paris Business and Professional Women's Club donates more than $5,000 to endow a scholarship in its name, honoring those who worked for women's services.
The Paris Business and Professional Women’s Club has long been an influence in Paris and throughout Lamar County. After serving the community for over 60 years, the painful decision was made to disband as a chartered organization. In doing so, the remaining dozen or so members chose to leave a lasting influence by assisting women wishing to attend Paris Junior College. Thus, the members began the goal of fully endowing a scholarship in both honor and memory of those who have given so much for the cause of women’s services. This week, long-time members Victorene Young, Judy Nutt and Laura Carrington presented PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin with checks to officially create the fund in excess of $5,100. “We are grateful to each member who, through the years, has contributed to the changing role of business women in this community,” said Dr. Anglin. “Beginning next year, a scholarship will be awarded bearing the B&PW name recognizing the impact and leadership shown by those who have made this endowed gift possible.” While not under the umbrella of the national B&PW organization, the ladies continue to gather the first Thursday night of each month at a member’s home or area dining establishment looking for ways to continually give back. Current President Laura Carrington added, “As individuals, we will continue to support the endowed gift. Reaching the $5,000 mark was possible due to the support of our members along with children and grandchildren of former members.” PJC Director of Institutional Advancement Derald Bulls encouraged former members, families, friends and former employers of B&PW members to consider honoring the past service of business women from all walks of life. “Being the son of a former B&PW member, I know the spirit of this organization. Unlike most service clubs today, the women of the B&PW Club worked all day, met at night, only after preparing a meal for the family, before heading off to an evening club meeting.” “Paris Junior College appreciates the confidence these women have placed in the College,” said Dr. Anglin. “PJC is one of the best investments that can be made in our community. In addition to scholarships, we also welcome unrestricted gifts which allow PJC the opportunity to meet the challenges and unexpected opportunities which arise.” “We hope to increase the scholarship total to assist more women who are seeking to broaden their horizons through education,” Carrington added. Donations to the B&PW Scholarship Fund, or any type of gift, may be made to the Office of Institutional Advancement, Paris Junior College, 2400 Clarksville Street, Paris, TX 75460.
