Jurgen Maerz, director of technical education for Platinum Guild International, will appear at Paris Junior College’s Texas Institute of Jewelry Technology Wednesday, Oct. 5, to discuss the use of platinum and how best to work with the precious metal.

“Jurgen is the platinum guru of our industry,” said Ulla Raus, TIJT division chair. “His lectures are extremely well attended all over the country. Jewelers pay a lot of money to listen to him speak.

“All of our students will be attending, and I am inviting our local jewelers to come and listen to him, as well.”

Maerz’s Oct. 5 presentation on platinum will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. in room 1202 of PJC’s Applied Technologies building. Refreshments will be served prior to the presentation.

Maerz has taught for the Gemological Institute of America and was in charge of the Jewelry Manufacturing Arts Extension department. He has taught jewelry techniques throughout the U.S., and created the Platinum Educational Program that GIA offers.

Maerz is a JA Certified Master Bench Jeweler, the fourth person in the U.S. to receive this designation. Trade articles, seminars, hands-on workshops and factory visits are among his duties.

Maerz specializes in platinum casting issues. He spearheaded several new casting techniques and is constantly trying to improve the process.

He received an honorary doctorate in jewelry manufacturing arts from Cosmopolitan University.

“He has a wonderful presence, everyone adores him,” said Raus, who has known Maerz for years. “He is a magician, and he loves to sing.”
