Art Classes

NOTE: These courses are non-credit, but taught during regular academic class hours. Please consult the semester schedule for dates.

Ceramics I: This course is an introduction to basic clay processes. There will be kiln-firing techniques, raku and stoneware firing. Emphasis is placed on hand building techniques and basic glaze formations. The student is urged to find creative solutions to all problems and assignments posed. There will be lecture as well as hands-on projects.

Ceramics II: This course teaches advanced techniques in clay works and glaze formulation. Students will be introduced to the use of the potter’s wheel, RAKU and stoneware firing.

Design I: Fundamental art principles applied to the elements of line, space, form, value and color. Emphasis on two-dimensional design.

Intro to Digital Arts: Introduction to graphic design with manual and computer skills through the functional and anesthetic use of images and typography with bitmap and raster images - Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. (WECM Course Number ARTC1002 - Digital Imaging)

Drawing I: A beginning course with emphasis on a variety of processes designed to enhance perceptual and descriptive skills. Exploration of the form through the contour line, gesture, and modeled drawing.

Painting I: Beginning processes and theories of painting media. Emphasis on color and composition.

Photography I: Introduction to camera operation and image production, composition, flash usage, and use of exposure meters and filters. Explore the use of the camera for photographing in various lighting situations; demonstrate proper use of supplemental lighting; create photographic images; manipulate camera controls for specific outcome; compose a communicative image; and present work for critical discussion. Photography II: Further exploration into photography with the digital camera, including experimentation and refinement of the final print and digital software technology. (WECM Course Number PHTC1011 - Fundamentals of Photography)

Art Metals I: An exploration of the characteristic of metal while being shaped, pointed, textured and ornamented in the construction of art and craft forms. (WECM Course Number WLDG1005 - Art Metals)

Academic Cooperative Class: An instructional program designed to integrate on-campus study with practical hands-on work experience. In conjunction with class seminars, the individual student will set specific goals and objectives in the study of studio art and/or art history.
