Purpose

Paris Junior College provides information technology resources, including computing systems, networks, electronic communications, and Internet access, to support its mission. These resources are governed by Board policy CQ (Legal) and CQ (Local) and institutional procedures.

Scope

This policy applies to all users of College technology resources, including students, employees, contractors, and guests.

Users must:

  • Comply with all federal and Texas laws, including:
  • Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (unauthorized access)
  • Copyright law and Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)
  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Use technology resources for authorized educational, administrative, or operational purposes
  • Maintain the security of login credentials
  • Respect the privacy and rights of others

Users are responsible for all activity conducted under their accounts.

Users should have no expectation of absolute privacy when using College-owned systems.

In accordance with CQ (Legal/Local), the College reserves the right to monitor, access, and review data and activity on its systems when there is a legitimate educational, operational, safety, or legal need.

  1. Unauthorized Access and Security Violations
  • Accessing systems, accounts, or data without authorization
  • Attempting to bypass security controls
  • Sharing passwords or credentials
  • Intercepting or attempting to intercept communications
  1. Disruption or Misuse of Systems
  • Interfering with network operations or services
  • Introducing malware or harmful code
  • Tampering with hardware, software, or network configurations
  1. Misuse of Information
  • Accessing or disclosing confidential information without authorization (including FERPA-protected data)
  • Violating copyright or licensing agreements
  • Downloading or distributing unauthorized materials
  1. Inappropriate or Harmful Use
  • Sending or accessing threatening, harassing, obscene, or discriminatory content
  • Using systems for bullying, harassment, or intimidation
  • Misrepresenting identity or impersonating others
  1. Commercial or Unauthorized Use
  • Using College systems for personal commercial gain without authorization
  • Reselling or redistributing network access

Technology resources are prioritized to support instruction and academic activities. Users must follow all lab and classroom guidelines and comply with directions from College personnel.

Users must:

  • Safeguard sensitive information
  • Follow institutional data security procedures
  • Report suspected security incidents immediately

Violations of this policy may result in:

  • Suspension or revocation of technology access
  • Disciplinary action under Student Code of Conduct (FMA/FLB)
  • Employment action (if applicable)
  • Referral to law enforcement

  • Access or share someone else’s personal information

  • Your activity may be monitored under CQ (Legal/Local)
  • Misuse may result in disciplinary action (FLB/FMA) or legal consequences
