L-3 Integrated Systems awarded scholarships to the inaugural class of 20 students of the new Paris Junior College Aircraft Training Facility today.

L-3 Site Executive Jack Cooke and PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin presented the 20 students with scholarships that will cover the cost of their tuition and books during the 12-week course. Students also receive a weekly $250 stipend while attending.

“We at L-3 are happy to show our support of this initiative through these scholarships,” said Jack Cooke, L-3 Greenville Site Executive. “It is through the combined efforts of businesses, educational institutions and students that our community will continue to grow and prosper.”

PJC and L-3 recognize the need in the community to create local educational and employment opportunities for area residents.

“The cooperation between PJC and L-3 has produced an outstanding training program that will help boost economic development in Hunt County and the surrounding area and provides great career opportunities for the students,” said Dr. Pamela Anglin, President of Paris Junior College. “This project embodies everything that PJC stands ready to do for our students and area business and industry.”

The curriculum for the school has been developed through a collaborative effort between PJC and L-3 to meet defense contractor qualifications for entry-level aircraft mechanics. Students completing the coursework will graduate from the school with structural aircraft maintenance certification and will have acquired the skills necessary to begin working directly with the structural components of an aircraft.

“We’re very pleased with the curriculum we developed in partnership with L-3 that meets industry standards and utilizes state-of-the-art equipment,” said Kevin Rose is PJC Dean of Workforce and Continuing Education. “We believe students will receive second-to-none training and go on to high-paying jobs in the aircraft maintenance field.”

This includes, but is not limited to, aircraft familiarization, aerospace shop practices, riveting and drilling, corrosion identification and repair, intermediate soldering and wiring, practical use of hand tools, blueprint reading and proper use of aeronautical tools and chemicals.

The next course will begin in November and focus on electrical mechanics skills. All the courses will be taught in the state-of-the-art training facility at Majors Field. The facility contains multiple classrooms, a computer lab, faculty office space and an approximately 6,000-square-foot aircraft hangar, which will be used for real-world hands-on projects. The instructors are highly trained, industry-recognized leaders in their field.
