The curriculum of the Aircraft Mechanics program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to be able to enter the job market as an entry-level aircraft structural mechanic or an aircraft electrician. As a structural mechanic, students will acquire the skills necessary to begin working directly with the structural components of an aircraft. As an electrical mechanic, students will acquire the skills necessary to work with aircraft electrical systems.

The program is taught in a state-of-the-art training facility at Majors Field in Greenville, Texas. The facility contains multiple classrooms, a computer lab, faculty office space and an approximately 6,000-square-foot aircraft hangar which will be used for real-world hands-on projects. The instructors are highly trained, industry-recognized leaders in their field.

What will be taught in the course?

Upon successful completion of the course of study in the Aircraft Mechanics program a student will possess the knowledge and skills to be able to enter the job market as either an entry-level aircraft structural mechanic or an aircraft electrician. As a structural mechanic, students will acquire the skills necessary to begin working directly with the structural components of an aircraft. This will include, but is not limited to, aircraft familiarization, aerospace shop practices, riveting and drilling, corrosion identification and repair, intermediate soldering and wiring, practical use of hand tools, blueprint reading, and proper use of aeronautical tools and chemicals. As an electrical mechanic, students will learn how to solder, work with shielded and unshielded wires, use various types of wire termination devices, build up multi-wire connectors, install and terminate overall shielding using several different methods, learn how to read electrical blueprints, various coax cable terminations, modular plug terminations, wire up relays, terminal boards, circuit breakers and install diodes, safety wiring, build up ground studs, learn color codes, understanding of wire routing in an aircraft by signal category separation, securing and tying wire bundles in an aircraft, install wiring per diagrams in a mock-up environment, using a multi-meter and electrical troubleshooting.

How long is the course, and what are the class times?

The structural course is 12 weeks in length and will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with 30 minutes for lunch. The electrical course is eight weeks in length.

Where will the course be taught?

Both the Structural Mechanics and Electrical programs are taught at the PJC facility at Majors Field (airport) in Greenville, Texas. The facility is a state of the art training facility with multiple classrooms, a computer lab, faculty office space, and an approximately 6,000-square-foot aircraft hangar which is used for teaching practical application skills.

Is space limited?

Yes. In order to provide every student the space, time and equipment necessary to meet the program’s objectives, only 20 spaces for students per class will be available.

Can I get on a waiting list?

Yes. While only one course will be offered at a time, multiple courses will be offered each year. Contact the PJC Workforce and Continuing Education Department at 903-782-0447 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
What is the cost of the program?

The cost of the aircraft mechanic certification program is $2,000. There are no financial aid packages available at this time for this program. However, there are periodic scholarships available to students. Check with PJC for availability.

Does the program qualify for college credit?

No, the program is offered through PJC’s Workforce and Continuing Education department. Upon completion of the training program all students will receive a program certificate of completion from Paris Junior College and a formal record of the training will be maintained by PJC.

What is the application process?

It is important to note that during 2009 PJC has received sponsorship funds, including scholarships from a leading aerospace industry contractor. Therefore, only students who receive a scholarship will be admitted into the training program during 2009. The school will be made available to the general public in 2010 at the regular tuition rate of $2,000 per course of study. Failure to meet any of the application deadlines will eliminate the applicant from the application process. The process during 2008-2009 is as follows:

2. If your application is accepted, you will be notified to schedule an appointment to take a general assessment test.

3. Based on results of the assessment scores and scholarship applications, candidates may be requested to interview with a scholarship selection committee.

4. Successful scholarship recipients will be notified by phone or mail.
