General Requirements

All new dual credit students will need the following:

» Application For Admission (One Time Only)

» Residency Status Form. (One Time Only)

» Advisement and Enrollment Form. (Every Semester)

» High school transcript. (Once Per Year)

» Counselor approval letter. (Once Per Year)

» Test scores or exemption documentation. This is documented on the transcript unless the student took THEA, Accuplacer, COMPASS, etc.

» Payment.

Exemptions & Test Scores

Students who meet qualifying standards on certain tests, as indicated below, may be exempt from testing.

Note: TAKS scores are valid for three years from the date of testing. SAT and ACT scores are valid for five years from the date of testing.

» TAKS (exit-level) - 2200 in math and/or 2200 in English/Language Arts (ELA) with a writing subscore of at least 3.

» SAT - a combined score of 1070 with a 500 on the math and/or verbal sections.

» New SAT: No qualifying standards are available for the new Writing section. For TSI purposes, institutions are to use only the standards for the Math and Verbal (Critical Reading) sections.

» ACT - a composite score of 23 with a 19 on the math and/or english sections.

If not exempt:

A student must pass the portion of the test that correlates with the dual credit class. THEA is given by the state, Accuplacer is given by PJC, and Compass is given by TAMU-Commerce.

The tests and minimum passing standards (an institution may require higher performance standards) for the Texas Success Initiative are:

ACCUPLACER
Elementary Algebra - 63 (PJC requires the student to take the College-Level Math exam and score 43 or better to enroll in Math 1314.)
Reading Comprehension - 78
Written Essay - 6 or [Written Essay - 5 and Sentence Skills - 80]

ASSET
Elementary Algebra - 38 (PJC requires the student to take the Intermediate Algebra test and score of 41 or better to enroll in Math 1314.)
Reading Skills - 41
Written Essay - 6 or [Written Essay - 5 and Writing Skills (multiple choice) - 40]

COMPASS
Algebra - 39 (PJC requires a score of 45 or better to enroll in Math 1314..)
Reading Skills - 81
Written Essay - 6 or [Written Essay - 5 and Writing Skills (multiple choice) - 59]

THEA
Mathematics - 230 (PJC requires a score of 270 or better to enroll in Math 1314.)
Reading - 230
Writing - 220

The writing sections of these tests are all scored in the same manner and the main determiner of passing the writing section is to pass the written essay. This means earning an essay score of 6 or higher is clearly passing. If you earn a score of 5 on the essay, then the multiple choice section is used to determine if you pass or fail. If you get an essay score of 5 and you also answered 70 percent or more of the multiple choice questions right, then you will pass the writing test.
