Fall Coach’s Comments

Dragons Head Baseball Coach Deron Clark's occasional comments on his team's play during fall scrimmage season.

Nov. 4, 2005

The Dragons baseball team finally completed its fall scrimmage schedule for the 2005 season.

The team traveled to UTA on Wednesday, Oct. 26, to play Vernon Junior College for the final contest. Pitching was the premium for the day as each team only scored in two innings during the 14-inning contest. The Dragons lost game one, 2-0, and were victorious in game two, 2-0.

The team really showed some bright spots as North Lamar HIgh School pitcher Casey Smith finished the fall season with 2.08 ERA, pitching in 26 innings and walking only 7 and striking out 16. Sophomore shortstop Pat Robey was another player who has had a great fall, hitting .364 and fielding at .965 clip.

Sophomore RHP Zach Baker and freshman catcher Matt Combs have made commitments to attend schools next fall. Baker, who is from Nacogdoches Central Heights High School, has committed to Sam Houston State University, and Combs (Liberty-Eylau High School) has committed to Louisiana Tech University.

Other players have offers pending.

Oct. 4, 2005

Our Texas-New Mexico Junior College Baseball Coaches Association All Star Game was this past weekend at Baylor University. The Dragons were represented by four players, and they all made good showings.

Pat Robey, SS, was 1 for 3 with a walk and had several great plays in the field.  Zach Baker, RHP, pitched 2 innings and allowed 0 runs on 3 hits and 1 walk.  Adam Rimlinger, RHP, pitched two innings and allowed 0 runs on 1 hit and 3 strikeouts.

Phil Collins, OF, was hitless in the contest, but made 3 outstanding catches in center field.

Sept. 27, 2005

The Dragons have posted some impressive play in the past couple of weeks as they have taken on Brookhaven College, Eastern Oklahoma, Bossier Parish Community College and Northeast Texas Community College, to name a few.

The pitching staff is showing definite promise as sophomore Kyle Braden has put together several weeks of impressive performances, holding stats of 10 IP, 1.80 ERA, 4 K and 2 ER and 4 BB during that span. Jordan Kratz, LHP freshman from McKinney High School, has 9 IP, 2.00 ERA, 7 K and 3 BB.

Offensively, sophomore Pat Robey from Longview is hitting a hot .464, with 5 runs and 4 rbi and a .531 on-base percentage. Freshman Matt Apfel from Flower Mound Marcus is swinging at a .423 pace with 7 rbis, 2 hr, 1 2B, 8 runs scored.

This weekend the Dragons will take a break for the JUCO All Star game at Baylor University. Sophomores, Zach Baker (RHP), Adam Rimlinger (RHP), Pat Robey (SS), and Phil Collins (OF) will representing PJC as all star selections.

Sept. 13, 2005

Baseball opened up the fall season with a trip to Wilburton, Okla., on Friday and then hosted Eastfield College from Mesquite, Texas, on Saturday.

Big performances at the plate came from freshman Sam Merrill (Omaha, Neb.). In the two games Merrill was 5 for 9 with 2 RBIs, 3 runs and 3 stolen bases. Pat Robey was hot, as well. He went 4 for 10, 2 RBIs, 3 BBs, 1 SB.

On the mound several pitchers had good starts to the fall season. Sophomores Zach Baker (Nacogdoches Central Heights) and Adam Rimlinger (Waco Reicher) combined for 6 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K and 1 BB. Freshman Tim Heath (Flower Mound Marcus), Zach Oliver (Waco Midway) and Daniel Martin (Harelton) put up impressive first outings, as well. Oliver and Heath both stuck out 4 in their 3 innings, and Martin held Eastfield scoreless in his 3 innings.

The Dragons travel on Wednesday to TCU to take on McLennan and Navarro. On Friday we travel to Addison to take on Brookhaven.
