Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, specific requirements are in place to minimize exposure of the Paris Junior College students, faculty, staff and visitors. To ensure the safety of all faculty, staff and students during the pandemic, the following measures are required.  Students not complying will be found in violation of the Paris Junior College Student Code of Conduct and subject to disciplinary action.

PJC fall semester offers new class types, start date changed (posted July 23, 2020)

Rising to the continued challenges delivered by the COVID-19 pandemic, Paris Junior College is offering four types of classes, a revised start date for the fall semester, and changes to residence hall life to keep on campus students safe.

Originally slated to the begin August 24, the PJC fall semester now starts on Sept. 8, the Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday.

“As service area high schools have set September 8 as the start date based on county Health Department guidelines, Paris Junior College is setting our opening day to coincide,” said Dr. Pam Anglin, PJC President.

The newest PJC course modality is an interactive video class, which meets via a real-time, two-way video connection between students and teachers. Students participate live in class lectures and activities, and ask questions and receive immediate feedback without having to come to campus.

Traditional face-to-face classes will meet at a scheduled day and time in small class numbers, to permit social distancing. This gives access to the instructor, providing immediate feedback and social interaction with other students.

Hybrid courses have small groups of students meeting in person at a scheduled day and time with half of the time spent face to face and half spent online.

Fully online classes meet entirely online, giving students flexibility to work on class material any time, engage with the instructor and ask questions via email and during online office hours, and they do not have to travel to and from campus.

“In addition to offering four types of classes to meet student needs, PJC has scholarships and federal grant money available to help students pay for their classes,” Dr. Anglin said. “The State of Texas will use a portion of their Education CARES Act dollars to increase the available financial aid to help students continue their education. Everyone that wants to go to college should be able to this fall, and PJC is a wonderful place to begin your education.”

Residence halls will be open for students to move in over the Labor Day weekend. There will be one student per room now, instead of two. Since housing is limited this fall, rooms will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis.  For questions on student housing, call 903-782-0433.

Beginning March 23, 2020, all courses at Paris Junior College, the PJC-Greenville Center, and the PJC-Sulphur Springs Center will be provided online. The Paris, Greenville, and Sulphur Springs locations are closed indefinitely due to COVID-19. Important student support services are being staffed to assist in this transition. This will continue until physical locations may be re-opened.

Internet Hot Spots: For assistance accessing the Internet, password enabled wifi hotspots will be available in the parking lots of the following buildings. The password will be provided via DragonMail to each student.

To create a PDF - use the free app “Genius Scan”.  This app can convert a picture taken on a phone to a PDF and the PDF can be attached to an email.

Different types of aid available to PJC students; Summer I scholarship deadline approaches (posted May 26, 2020)

While remote registration for summer and fall 2020 classes continue at Paris Junior College, students have several financial aid options available, from regular sources and special assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Graduating high school students are eligible for a scholarship covering tuition for one Summer I or Summer II class. Those wishing to take a Summer I class must apply by this Friday, May 29; those classes start June 1. Funding for students has also been received through The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) to make emergency grants to students who were moved from face to face to online classes in the spring semester.

Students must be Title IV eligible, meaning they must: be a U.S. Citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen; hold a valid Social Security number (SSN); have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent such as a GED diploma or a high school curriculum in a homeschool setting that satisfies Texas requirements for homeschooling; be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment as a student at PJC. Full-time spring semester students may receive $500 and part-time students $250 grants.

Awards will be made for students enrolled in the summer and fall of a yet to be determined amount.

PJC has also set aside $200,000 for emergency grants to students. To be considered for an emergency grant, a student must fill out an online form on computer, phone or tablet at https://parisjc.wufoo.com/forms/pjc-cares-act-emergency-grant-application/. The grant may be up to $500 and can cover such items as rent, utilities, food, technology and child care.

“We want our students - and prospective students - to know that PJC wishes to help them reach their educational goals,” said PJC President Pam Anglin, “all they have to do is ask for help.”

PJC workforce students return Monday, May 18 to finish spring semester (posted May 14, 2020)

While most sophomores at Paris Junior College have finished their online classes and applied for graduation, students in some workforce programs will return on Monday, May 18 as part of a phased-in reopening process.

“Our faculty and students in spring semester workforce courses with hands-on labs will be allowed to return to campus to complete their courses,” said PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin. “The only people allowed on our campuses will be identified spring semester workforce students and their faculty along with essential employees that have been on campus since our COVID-19 closure. We will begin a phased in opening process with planned full operation by the fall semester.”

Entrance for classes in the Applied Sciences Building is on the east side of campus from Collegiate Drive by the Hunt Center. Entrance for the Workforce Training Center will be from Clarksville St., by Capizzis Restaurant on the north end of campus. There will be one entry into the building at both the PJC - Greenville and the PJC - Sulphur Springs Centers.

All vehicles must enter and exit in these locations.  At the checkpoint, those entering must answer health questions and have their temperature taken, and their name be on a list of students and employees allowed on campus. Anyone coming on campus must wear a mask and practice appropriate hand sanitizing.

“This follows the Governor’s guidelines for Reopening Texas and the designated higher education checklist,” said Dr. Anglin.

June 1 marks the beginning of Summer I and Extended Terms. Academic classes for university transfer are online, and workforce programs will be hybrid - the classroom portion will start online, with students on campus later in the term to complete in-person lab work.

Summer workforce programs offering classes include accounting, air conditioning and refrigeration, business management, computer aided design and 3D printing - both standard and in the jewelry program, cybersecurity, computer networking, electrician, emergency medial services,  gemology, medical records coding, mechatronics, nursing, office technology, radiology technology, surgical technology, watchmaking, and welding.

Students are encouraged to continue using online services if possible and may make virtual appointments with advisors. Should a problem arise that can’t be solved remotely, an appointment may be made for a student to come to campus.

Online registration is open for the summer and fall 2020 semesters for all PJC locations. PJC Student Financial Aid Relief - COVID-19 and Loss of Income (posted April 29, 2020)

Paris Junior College is currently working to process income changes related to the Coronavirus pandemic.  If you are a PJC student or planning to attend PJC in the Summer 2020 or Fall 2020, please compete the appropriate FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.gov using the instructions on the application. Next, make a COVID-19 Change of income request to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and submit the required information. This will allow us to make the income adjustments to reflect your current income. If a student already has a Zero Estimated Family Income (EFC)  from an already processed FAFSA, no income change is necessary. You are receiving the maximum financial aid available.

Students can use financial aid at the PJC Bookstore online (posted April 17, 2020)

PJC students may now use financial aid at the PJC Bookstore online. Go to https://www.bkstr.com/parisjcstore and place your order. At checkout, you will see a drop down for payment methods with the options of credit card or financial aid. Select financial aid and enter your student number. The website will check the amount of aid you have on file against your order. If your order is less than the amount of aid available, your order will be completed. If your order is for an amount more than the financial aid you have on file, you will need to make an additional payment to cover that amount.

PJC campuses will remain closed through end of spring semester (posted April 3, 2020)

Following the mandate from Governor Greg Abbott that schools be closed through April 30, Paris Junior College will not reopen any locations for the remainder of the Spring semester and finish all classes online. Originally the semester was to end on May 8. Due to extending Spring Break one week, the semester end was moved to May 15.

“With the dates so close,” said PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin, “the College will extend the online only environment to the end of spring semester.”

Students in workforce programs who need to come in physically to complete their labs will be given an incomplete. As soon as it is safe to bring students back, a schedule will be developed and students will be informed of when they can come in to complete their course.

Summer Class Schedule Now Available, Registration Open (posted March 20, 2020)

The PJC Summer Class Schedule is now available at http://www.parisjc.edu/schedule. (Note: There are many online courses offered by PJC this summer. The face-to-face classes listed may need to be changed to online classes prior to the start of the semester.)

Paris Junior College moves to all online classes on March 23 (posted March 17, 2020)

Campuses will be closed indefinitely and all courses will be available online for students on March 23, 2020.  Each faculty member should be notifying their students through DragonMail or by individual phone calls. Students should be logging in to Blackboard and checking their DragonMail for course updates.

Paris Junior College extends Spring Break one week for students (posted March 13, 2020)

Although there are no cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) at Paris Junior College, there are some confirmed cases in nearby counties. Consequently, out of an abundance of concern for our students, faculty, staff, and our community, PJC has determined to extend the 2020 spring break for students for one week, March 16-20.

Campuses will be closed to students during this week, but students may call the campus. This time will allow faculty and staff to prepare and coordinate planning for the remainder of the semester. Online classes, including the 8-week term courses set to begin March 16, will continue as normal.

On Monday, March 23, PJC classes will resume, strictly in an online environment. It is hoped that face-to-face classes will resume on April 6. The College will continue to monitor the situation and confirm this date or extend online classes depending on the situation at that time. A determination will be made in the coming weeks about the ability to continue face-to-face classes for the remainder of the semester, hold final exams in person/on campus, and the ability to hold commencement as currently scheduled.

Faculty and Staff

Although students will receive an additional week of spring break (March 16-20), all full-time faculty and staff should report to campus on Monday, March 16. The week of March 16-20 will be used for faculty and staff to prepare and coordinate planning for the remainder of the semester. Part-time employees are not to report to work unless contacted and instructed to do so by their supervisor.

Student Workers

Student workers are not expected to return to campus to work until Monday, April 6. The College will continue to monitor this situation and confirm this date or extend the date depending on the situation.

Self-Monitoring / Self-Isolation / Self-Quarantine

If a student or an employee who has traveled outside of the U.S. during the last 14 days or who has traveled to an area in the U.S. that has had reported COVID-19 cases, this individual may need to self-isolate or self-quarantine and should follow all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations. Students who choose to self-isolate should notify their instructor. Employees electing to self-isolate should notify their supervisor and Human Resources.

Student Travel

Student Travel (including athletics) – All Paris Junior College sponsored student travel (including athletic travel) is suspended until Monday, April 6. The College will continue to monitor the situation and confirm this date or extend the suspension of travel depending on the situation at that time.

Employee Travel

All travel for PJC employees is suspended until Monday, April 6, unless it is determined to be mission-critical or health-critical and has been approved by the College leadership.

Employees are responsible for canceling all travel plans and reservations. Please note that the College will work with faculty and staff regarding incurred expenses for conferences or events that have been canceled or for conferences or events where the College has suspended travel.

Precautions to Continue to Take

• Wash your hands for 20 seconds
• Use hand sanitizer
• Avoid shaking hands
• Maintain a good “social distance” between you and others
• Disinfect frequently touched objects using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe
• Stay home when you are sick and avoid close contact with those who are sick
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Spring Break extended two days for PJC students (posted March 12, 2020)

Paris Junior College has announced that Spring Break has been extended through March 17 for students, who should expect to return Wednesday, March 18, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). Employees are expected to return to work as normal at the conclusion of Spring Break on Monday, March 16.

“We are working on contingency plans to minimize disruption to our students’ studies while doing everything we can to mitigate the spread and impact of COVID-19,” said PJC President, Dr. Pam Anglin.

“We are monitoring updated information provided by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control,” Anglin said, “and in frequent communication with city, state and county officials as well as other area institutions of education to assess the best course forward for ensuring the safety of our students and employees.”

Paris Junior College is monitoring national, state, and local developments of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Currently, there are no known cases or patients among PJC students, faculty, and staff or in the PJC five county service area. Health officials highly recommend that students, as well as faculty, staff, and the general public, continue to practice preventive actions as flu season hits its peak.

College Measures (posted March 6, 2020)

  PJC’s Emergency Management team is monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating closely with local and state health and public safety agencies, as well as local government, schools, and universities.
 
  PJC developed a Coronavirus information website and will post regular updates.
 
  The college will post reminders about washing hands and signage about healthy habits to help prevent viruses from spreading.
 
  PJC’s custodial crews are sanitizing facilities daily, including high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs and handles.
 
  Hand sanitation stations are available on campus and may be found by doors and entryways. Additional stations are being deployed college-wide.
 
  The College is working to provide the appropriate sanitizing wipes for computer keyboards in labs, the library and Testing Center.
 
  On the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control, we have reminded anyone who begins experiencing fever, cough, or difficulty breathing to contact their primary healthcare provider and remain home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of medication.
 
  The college is monitoring CDC travel alerts. The college is prepared to make additional adjustments to college-related travel as circumstances warrant.

The CDC is responding to an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by COVID-19. Cases have been identified in a growing number of other locations internationally, including the U.S. The link below will direct you to a map that represents cases detected and tested in the U.S. through U.S. public health surveillance systems since January 21, 2020. What is a Coronavirus?

COVID-19 is a newly identified coronavirus that is causing an outbreak of respiratory illness. This coronavirus can cause illness that is mild — a simple cold or upper respiratory infection — to more severe cases that can result in life-threatening pneumonia. It was first identified in December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Cases also have been identified in multiple other countries including the U.S.

What is the risk?

The immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low at this time, although additional travel-associated cases and transmissions among close contacts are expected. On Friday, January 31, 2020, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency for COVID-19 and issued new travel guidance. Most major American-based airlines also have suspended all flights to China.

If you have not traveled to China or have not been in contact with a person known or suspected to have the illness, there is no reason to be concerned at this time. Review the CDC travel alerts for coronavirus for more information.

If you have traveled recently to Wuhan, China, had close contact with someone who has been confirmed with, or is being evaluated for the coronavirus, you should: Monitor your health for 14 days, from the day you first traveled or had close contact with someone ill with this new coronavirus. Call your doctor, urgent care, or hospital BEFORE going. They will give you instructions. If you have symptoms, stay away from other people until you receive instructions.

What are the symptoms?

Reported illnesses for COVID-19 have ranged from little to no symptoms to severe illness and death. People most seriously affected tend to be young children, adults over 65 and individuals with weakened immune systems. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) believes at this time that symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

Symptoms are similar to other respiratory viruses ad may be flu-like, ranging from mild to serious, and include:

  Fever (may not always be present)
  Cough
  Difficulty breathing or shortness of breathing or shortness of breath

Other early symptoms to look for include:

  Chills
  Body aches
  Sore throat
  Headache
  Diarrhea
  Nausea/vomiting
  Runny nose

If you have these symptoms it does not necessarily mean you have this new virus. Unless you have recently traveled to Wuhan, China or have been around someone ill with this new virus, your risk of getting sick is low.

How can I protect myself?

How can I know if I might have been in contact with an affected patient?

The Texas Department of State Health Services and the local county health departments will determine who should be notified based on an ill party’s contacts.

Does the flu shot prevent the COVID-19?

No, the flu shot is formulated to match influenza viruses expected to be circulating in the United States during the 2019-2020 flu season.
