Nearly 730 receive diplomas and certificates

Nearly 730 students were awarded diplomas and certificates during Paris Junior College's commencement ceremonies held Friday at Noyes Stadium. The record number of graduates was matched with an overflow crowd in the stands.
Dr. Pamela Anglin, president of Paris Junior College, presented plaques recognizing the retirements of Licensed Vocational instructor Debbie Bookout, Health Occupations instructor Sheila Jones and Electro-Mechanical Technologies instructor Larry Roberts, and honoring them for their service to the students of PJC.
Dr. Anglin also announced special recognition of longtime English instructor/Writing Lab Coordinator Joan Mathis. Recently named as a Minnie Stevens Piper Professor, Ms. Mathis was honored during graduation with the presentation of her pin, certificate and honorarium marking the occasion for her teaching excellence.
The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Jon Mark Abbey of Paris. The award recognizes academic achievement and service to the community by an outstanding graduating student. Faculty and professional staff of the College select the recipient of this award. Jon Mark is a member of the Dragons baseball team and past member of Chorale.
He has performed in events that include Songs of the Season. Named to Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, he was named to the Dean's List for academic excellence and entered PJC as a Texas Scholar. He was nominated for the 2010 PJC Homecoming King and was voted Mr. PJC this spring. Jon Mark will transfer to Southern Arkansas University to pursue his degree in history. Gloria Cooper of Paris was also nominated for the Distinguished Service Award.
