PJC Regents hear the good news about enrollment

Published or Revised September 23, 2008

After the September meeting of the Paris Junior College Board of Regents was called to order, members heard the official good news of record enrollment, both in number of students taking courses and contact hours, from PJC Institutional Research Director Jerry Hammack. "We wouldn't have these numbers if it weren't for the Business Office, instructors and student services people," Hammack said. "It was a total effort by everyone involved, and we're up over last fall on each of the campuses and over 1000 in dual credit students. Everything's very positive." The Regents adopted a resolution honoring former PJC President Dr. Dennis Michaelis, who has announced his retirement for next August from McLennan College in Waco. Dr. Michaelis was PJC president from 1983-1988, and he will be invited to this year's Homecoming festivities to receive the resolution. "The running track wouldn't be at Dragon Park without his determination and leadership," said PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin. "Without him we also might still be playing sports in the old gym instead of the Hunt Center." Dr. Anglin also reported that new Vice President of Student Services Dr. Sherry Aaker will spearhead a committee reviewing the advising process. Dr. Anglin and Dean of Academics Dean Chaney will attend a conference in Austin on developmental education, and announced the November visit of national expert, Dr. Hunter Boylan, to review PJC's developmental studies program. Dr. Anglin will also be part of a panel at the Women in Higher Education Conference at Baylor University on Oct. 9. The Regents honored Dr. Anglin with a commendation for her outstanding work on the new PJC — Greenville center construction and opening. In other business, the Regents:
  • Chose ING as the third-party administrator for employees' 403(b) investments.
  • Adopted a plan to reduce energy use by 5 percent each year for six years, as required by state law.
  • Set a special meeting to consider roofing bids for the west wing of the Administration building for Oct. 1 at noon.
  • Rescheduled the October meeting of the Board of Regents for Oct. 20.
  • Selected light colored bricks for the new dorm facades to match to majority of buildings on the Paris campus.
  • Approved the hiring of Lucy Offutt as Licensed Vocation Nursing clinical instructor. Ms. Offutt earned her associate of applied science in nursing from PJC and a bachelor of science in nursing from Oklahoma Wesleyan University. She is a registered nurse with the State of Texas and has nine years of nursing experience.
The next meeting of the PJC Board of Regents will be Oct. 20, 2008.
