PJC Regents OK core curriculum additions

Published or Revised October 24, 2007

The Paris Junior College Board of Regents Monday evening approved the addition of several courses to the college's core curriculum, a set of courses deemed central to the educational experience at PJC. The core curriculum also assures students of easy transfer to other educational institutions. The courses, all but one of which is already offered outside the core curriculum, will provide PJC students more variety when choosing how to complete their core requirements. PJC President Dr. Pamela Anglin told Regents the additional courses, particularly among the humanities, can only benefit the college's students. "I think this will increase our number of graduates," she said. "The humanities have for a long time been of particular interest [among faculty members working with the core curriculum]," said Dwight Chaney, PCJ's dean of academic studies. "What we have proposed is a variety of different courses." Students may choose from several courses to satisfy their core requirements in the categories of written communication, oral communication, math, natural lab sciences, humanities, visual and performing arts, social and behavioral sciences and kinesiology. Courses added to the core curriculum under humanities include ARTS 1303 - Art History I; COMM 1307 - Introduction to Mass Communications; HIST 2311 - The History of Western Civilization; and HIST 2312 - The History of Western Civilization. Courses added under natural lab sciences are PHYS 1411 - Astronomy I, and PHYS 1412 - Astronomy II. Both are online courses and include a lab component. The single new course, PSYC 2306 - Psychology of Sexual Behavior, will fall under the social and behavioral sciences category. Dr. Anglin also informed Regents that PJC would soon receive $87,000 in Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board funds under its Nursing Shortage Reduction Program as a result of increasing the school's number of nursing graduates. In other action Monday evening, the Board of Regents:
  • Heard a report on planned Homecoming 2007 activities from Johnye Robertson, director of institutional development and the PJC Alumni Association.
  • Heard a report on the capital campaign feasibility study.
  • Approved the 2008-2009 academic calendar.
  • Approved the continued use of a formula for determining tuition for continuing education courses.
  • Declined a request by the Paris Elks Lodge for a charitable organization property tax exemption.
