PJC Regents hear fall enrollment figures

Published or Revised September 26, 2007

Contact hours at Paris Junior College increased by 1.4 percent for the fall 2007 semester, while enrollment dropped by just 20 students. "That means more people are taking more classes," Dr. Jerry Hammack, PJC's director of institutional research, told the PJC Board of Regents during the group's regular meeting Monday evening. "And that's a good thing." Enrollment at PJC for the fall semester is at 4,289, down just 0.46 percent from the 4,309 enrolled for the fall 2006 semester. Contact hours rose by 13,328 to 972,688 for fall 2007. Enrollment at the Paris campus increased slightly to 2,274 from 2,269 in fall 2006. PJC - Greenville Center's enrollment decreased by 27 to 1,139 from 1,166 in fall 2006, while enrollment at PJC - Sulphur Springs Center rose by 35 students to 684 from 649 in fall 2006. Those figures include dual-credit courses taken by area high school students. An additional 192 students are enrolled in PJC classes on the campus of Texas A&M University - Commerce. Regents also voted Monday evening to increase PJC's tax rate by 0.0058 cents to 0.198 cents per $100 valuation. In other action Monday, the Board of Regents:
  • Heard a report from Dr. Hammack on the progress of PJC's Achieving the Dream project, including various statistical analyses of the college's student population.
  • Accepted a bid of $256,625 by Parson's Commercial Roofing for an overlay of the existing roof on the Bobby R. Walters Applied Technologies Building.
  • Approved a resolution in memory of former PJC Regent Spencer Abbett, noting his contributions both to the college and the community.
  • Tabled until the October meeting of the board consideration of granting the Paris Elks Lodge a charitable organization property tax exemption.
  • Discussed attendance at the Texas Association of Community College Trustees meeting Oct. 28-30 in Austin.
  • Set Monday, Oct. 22, as the date of the board's next regular meeting.
Following an executive session, Regents approved the following personnel changes:
  • The employment of Jami Hopkins as clinical coordinator of radiology, effective Oct. 5. She holds a bachelor of science degree in nuclear medicine and a bachelor of science radiology from the University of Arkansas, and is certified through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • The resignations of Bradley Gifford as student recruiter and Jeanne Kraft as coordinator of continuing education.
